: Newbie front Dana 44 Question(gears)

I found a real nice full size Dana 44 in a junkyard w/ flattops knuckles, and a good price. Since I would need to rotate the pinion, I would have to remove the knuckles anyhow.

But...the pumkin is on the wrong side.

Q: Can I flip it over and put in different gears (i.e. does someone make?) to turn the tires the right direction? Same as the rear?

Thanks

No, rc housings are different. You'd have to have the tubes blown out and swapped.

I see how I can take off the knuckles, but how do I get the inner "welds" from the pumkin? You said "blown" out? like have Monica Lewinski suck them out or something? I see the two holes in the case diff, grind those out??

There are I believe two plug welds on each tube where it joins the third member. Take a blow torch and blow em out real good. Then if you're lucky you might get them out since they are pressed in from the factory.

Ok dude, no offense but if you don't know you can't flp the axle over you should not be messing with trying to retube the axle. Do a search on this site as well as others. I know BC 4x4 (http://www.bc4x4.com) has a write up, I'm sure 4x4 Wire does also.

There are more then a handful of vendors on this site that can retube an axle.

Just watch yourself make sure you don't get in too far over your head.

trade the thing for one with the diff on the right side?

Unless it's a high pinion axle you're just wasting your time trying to change the drop. Standard cut 44's are a dime a dozen in the junkyards. Just get one with the right drop.

No, look for another axle with the right drop or retube the one your looking at..unless its an RC D44 it wouldnt be worth the hasle IMO. :flipoff2:

thanks, I think I might just pull off the knuckles just to have them.

If someone hasn't yanked them yet. I need a ford axle though. Just keep looking I guess.
