Has anyone swapped in a 5.9 from a Grand Cherokee into a YJ? How difficult is it? Do you have to move the motor mounts? Do you have to modify the engine compartment to get the block to fit? I'm assuming I'll have to mate the two wiring harnesses together. (I currently have the AX-15 tranny and NP 231 T-case and a 91 4.0 L.)

A friend of mine totalled his Grand and has the engine up for grabs. I haven't found out yet if it is the 5.9 or 5.2.

Is the 5.2 an easier swap?

Will the bolt patterns for the 5.2 or 5.9 match the AX-15? I will eventually put in a NV4500, but until I blow up the AX-15, I need to run the 15.

(I did a search on POR and a guy recommended to search JU. JU http://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/smilie/puke.gif actually had two articles on it!)

If the grand has a auto tranny ( which most do) you will need a bellhousing from a dakota 3.8. This will bolt to your engine and transfer and you can even use your orginal slave cylinder.

Buddy at Foothills 4x4 in Greenville, SC swapped a 5.9 in from a Dodge Magnum truck. he can help you with wiring and such. It's in a TJ but by the time he was done he had it all figured out for any vehicle.

Hope this helps you.

I say go for it. it's a very responsive and toquey motor from the get go.

if the new 5.9 is like earlier dodge 360's, then it is externally balanced. if this is the case, then you need to get the right flywheel for a 360. Even if the 5.9 is externally balanced, it may take i differently weighted flywheel thatn earlier ones, so don't assume anything from a 360 will work. wish i could help you out more, but newer stuff really isn't my thing.
