: Tranny question after rebuild (auto)

Just completed the rebuild of my Torqueflite 999 (904). In the process, I added a TransGo shift kit. Now it's time for adjustments.

I set the TV, front and rear bands according to the shift kit instructions. They differ slightly from the Shop Manual. Front band at 1.5 turns instead of 2 and rear band at 3.5 turns instead of 6.

Now for the symptoms...

1) Responds well to manual shifts in first and second. Never seems to achieve third when in drive even up to about 3500 rpm. It downshift fine from second to first both in automatic and when manually shifted.

2) When placed in reverse, it will idle without engaging. Give it a little gas and it harshly engages into reverse. From that point forward it drives well in reverse.

3) After some driving it doesn't seem to overheat the tranny (I can place my hands on the cooler lines without pain).

I hope someone with a little knowledge can assist. After doing my own rebuild, I would hate to call in the dogs now.

Vehicle: 1989 YJ Wrangler, 4.2, auto.

Jim

So just to be clear:
You tightened both bands to 72 inch lbs, and then backed off the kickdown band (front band) 1.5 turns and the 1st/rev band 3.5 turns?

If you can't hit 3rd, it sounds to me like the kickdown band might be too tight. Just a guess, and I'm no mechanic - but I am rebuilding a 904 right now.

Yes. I did this with the tranny out just after installing the front band. I guess it wouldn't ba a bad idea to check it again. I hope it's just an overly tight front band.

Any ideas about the reverse problem?

Could be the other band is misadjusted as well. The huge difference in the stock specs vs what your kit says is pretty odd. Might try calling transgo and asking them.
