: New pictures...
7.62FMJ 09-04-2006, 08:40 PM Finally got these developed. These pictures are from the first weekend my new tires were put on. I had to test them out. Didnt even use 4wd (probably because there is only 1 mud hole that is safe for trucks with 38's or less...and that's the one I was playing around in)
I know it's not much....just a small bump in the trail compared to some of your trucks. But it's what I got being a college student and working part time. Next on my list is a 10.50 rear axle and a SAS using a D60 (undecided on leafs or coil-overs), 4.88's with a detroit locker, and whatever tires will fit (havent decided on lift yet). After that (i.e. 10 years down the road) a 514ci FE/C6/205 is going in.

Hey, at least he's getting out and wheeling it. Thats a lot more than can be said for a lot of members on here:rolleyes:
Everyone started wheeling somewhere and if you tell me you started out with a built-to-the-hilt rig your full of shit. As for the topic at hand, the 514FE confuses me? First off I'd personally think a 514, 460 based stroker would be much cheaper to build, maybe thats what your thinking. If it were me, I'd just run a 5.4L in it for a good trail motor, maybe thats whats in it. I'd also personally do a SAS with a 78-79 Ford D44, run your stock axle, and run 35's. Thats a much more economical swap and will be pretty capable off-road. Check out my '79 build up, I'm only on 34's but its a dang capable little truck.
GMCTruxrule 09-05-2006, 05:43 PM FE motors are big, heavy and cumbersome powerplants. Very reliable and powerful, but I think that for your application, I would either run a stroked Windsor motor, or go 460.

Thanks for the kind words fellas :p
The 514 is a crate motor that Ford offers. It's basically a bored/stroked 460 like you said. And yeah, I could build a 460 cheaper....but going to the blueprinted 514 is just a drop in the bucket when you factor in the cost of axles, tranny, t-case, and the extensive frame mods it will take to fit that thing in there.
Currently, the truck has the 4.6L in it. It's a dog, and wont even get out of its own way. And the 5.4L doesnt offer enough benefits to justify a, long, costly engine swap.
I forgot to mention this...but I am building this truck for 80% mud. I would like to enter some mud drags, and I'd like to be able to play around in more than one mudhole at the place I go (I will add a picture to show ya).
I feel that this truck, being a fullsize, is too big for me to build it strictly for trails. I can barely fit in the parking spaces at college. I have crawled through a window a time or two.
Another reason...is the fact that there are only a couple of OHV trails around here (unless you want to try your luck in the national forest = fine/impound = $$$$), but there is mud everywhere.
FE motors are big, heavy and cumbersome powerplants. Very reliable and powerful, but I think that for your application, I would either run a stroked Windsor motor, or go 460.
A 351W will require just as much work/frame mods as a big block....so I dont think it would be worth the loss of power, just for an engine that is 100lbs lighter.
This mudhole is up to my shoulders....Dont ask me how I know :flipoff2:
And the truck in the other picture has a 460, 4 speed, and 42" TSL's, and got high-centered...

VerticalTRX 09-07-2006, 12:56 PM No shit! Wanna build one for me someday?
If you want someone a little more locally we'll build you whatever you want. FYI, a 472 is just a 460 bored ~.060 over, stock stroke. Most people would rather spend the little extra $$ and stroke it out a bit, going to 4.100" stroke is pretty cheap and will net you over 500ci on a slight over bore. To get a 514 you need to go up to 4.300" stroke and that gets a bit more pricey.
Fordman500 09-07-2006, 07:53 PM I dont think you can get 514 inches out of an FE... Why do people always bash on FE's? 428's are pretty bad ass. I am still trying to get my hands on an FE 454 that someone got from us a while ago... I mean 427 block w/ 428 crank n rods

hey, i see youre a fellow virginian. you oughta come up to the GWNF sometime, plenty of spots to wheel a mild rig like yours and mine, and plenty of people up here willing to go with ya.

Shure man, that is a mellow 450 HP motor. Or you can do a Huffer on it:D

An FE is a completely different engine family not related to the 460 in any way that is why GMCTrux warned against an FE engine.

Now that's what Im talkin about! I might as well ditch the hood...as Im gunna have to cut most of it away for clearance :D
Here's a truck that belongs to a member of another board Im on. It's a '49 F1, with a 1200-1400HP ~486ci big block (3.77 stroke/4.530 bore). 14-71 Littlefield blower. Alcohol injected. This is where I got my inspiration from:

What is the name of your shop? Im assuming you have a shop because you said "we." Where are you located? Im looking for a Ford BB that will put out around 700 HP/TQ naturally asperated. Mabey throwing on a blower/SC...not sure yet.
But I've got a couple, few years before I set this into motion. Need to finish up college first and get settled into a decent paying job.

Yeah good point. The FE series engines were great powerplants in their day, hell, they are getting more aftermarket support which isn't a bad thing.
If you already have a truck equipped with a 352, 360 or 390, modifying them to make some stump pulling torque ain't hard to do, however, to modify something new to an old FE setup is going to be fun, pricey and could be a real PITA.
Then there is the fun of changing out intakes, disturbing your entire valve train and just the boat anchor weight involved.

No name yet, were working on that. My buddy Terrance and I just do it in our spare time. His family has been building drag motors since the early 70's, and we both have been fabricating since we were old enough to run a welder. We're located in Elk Creek right now, thinking of opening a large fabrication, engine and 4wd shop somewhere in SW VA. Check out my F-150 build in my sig for examples of the work we do.
700lb-ft out of a 500ci+ naturally aspirated stroker would not be a problem whatsoever:smokin:
7.62FMJ 09-11-2006, 12:18 PM You guys are right about the FE being a different motor. For some reason, I was thinking that the 460 was in the FE group...which it is not. The 514 is based on the 460 (460 block, SCJ heads), so that's why I thought it was an FE.
I've even read through a few debates on what "FE" stood for. Most people agreed upon "Ford Engine," but there were a few other suggestions that were very convincing.
VerticalTRX: Nice work on the '78! I love the flatbed...very close to the style I like. And Good Luck with your "shop"
