Ok so the motor in the jeep i just bought blew on me. It is a 6 cyl and i am thinking of getting something else to put in it. I have access to a 90 Cherokee with a 6 cyl and manual trans 4x4 that i was thinking of putting in it. I was wondering what vehicles i could get to pull the motor out of to work in this 87 besides the 90 Cherokee. Also will the engine, trans, and trans case mounts work from the cherokee to the wrangler? Let me know. thanks

i would first look to see if you have the puegot transmission (if its manual) if it is plan on replacing it with any motor upgrade, then youll also be changing the input shaft on the tansfer case to a higher spline count to adapt to a new tranny..... your best bet is find a totalled 1991 - 1996 chevy truck with all the running gear and get to fabricating..... any toher options will cost about the same.... including swapping stock to stock. yes the 1990 parts will work but you have to use your original motor mounts to bolt up the motor from the cherokee in you (assuming) wrangler.! also the wiring will be different but thats with any swap....

what do you mean the motor "BLEW"?

Easiest and cheapest swap will be to find another 4.2 (CJ's, early YJ's) and just bolt it in. The Cherokee your looking at has a 4.0 which means installing the computer, harness, emmision system and installing a CPS on the bell (if you have a manual). If you go this route, consider swaping in the whole drivetrain to eliminate the crappy BA10/5 if thats what you have. you can use the engine mounts you have currently. There are a lot of writeups on the net concerning swapping a 4.0 in SWB Jeeps.

Another easy source for a cheap replacement would be an 80's Eagle, I just swapped one out of an Eagle sedan into an 85 cj7 earlier this year. It should be a direct bolt in.

My old 4.2 was out of an Eagle. I almost miss that motor.....almost...until i mash the throttle on the 401 and all that nostalgia goes right out the exhaustpipe :D

Oh yeah, we were talking about 4.2's :flipoff2:
