: Call it...SX's vs Parnelli's

Man, it's come down to tire buyin time and I can't choose. Here's my choices- 38x12.50 15 SX or the 37x12.50 Parnelli Jones. I've run SX's for the last 8 years and I know they work. But I have always run them on an extremely heavy rig-a 1-ton axled Scout II. I am building a new rig now that will weigh in at around 2500 pounds and I think the SX's may not grap as well as another tire could. Case in point, The Parnelli Jones. My little Bro ran them on his YJ and I was amazed at the traction in ANY situation. The sidewalls are stout, the balance is beyond comparison to any other tire, and they are different. They ONLY thing I don't like about the PJ is the lack of a prominent corner lug to grab at ledges and cracks when the wheel is turned. I'm not a big mud fan so I don't care if they don't "bog" well. The 38's are a little large and will put my new rig a ways up there for proper clearance, but I need the height to clear the dual 60's. The PJ is just small enough to fill the void between the 36 and 38. The PJ's also aired down more evenly and gripped better with more air than the SX at less psi. My rig is pure trail, but is definately cruise worthy and will be happy on the street. My primary trail area is the Black Hills where sharp granite and loose terrain rule the weak, but the PJ survived as well as the SX. So....?

why no MT/R? if you don't want to run the SX or TSL (which you should), get some 37" MT/Rs and call it a day.

Cuz the MTR's look like freakin' cheerios. They are just too puny looking. That and they are getting the snot ripped out of them up here. People can't sell them fst enough. The SX's rule here, but I want to run a tough tire that works better than the SX and lasts longer. I strongly believe that the best trail trucks are the ones driven to work the following Monday(makes you fix your brakes, don't it?), so I put a lot of highway miles on as well. But this is a serious trail machine. Dual 60's, a spool and a Detroit, GM Hydro boost brakes, injected V6, dual cases, coils and 3 links. All the goods, but not the fear of the street.
Hence my leaning towards the PJ's. That and it is sonething different to look at after the last eight years.

I am thinking PJ's to
they kick ass on the rocks here..

on the exact same rig switching tires...

the steering would not turn parked without squeling with front arb in with PJ's and with SX's it would turn em fine

but I gotta pretty good sipe/groove pattern I wanna try in somw sx's...

I thought PJ's came in 38;s ?

last... I wish the new bfg would come in like 38.5 - 13.5

IMHO... tsl bias no other tire.i have a DD and a serious trail rig i swear by the swampers .38's beadlocked and i drive 80-90m/hr on the hywy no joke.get them pad ballanced if running beads and you will luv them.PJ's are wayyyyyyyyy to expensive and you dont want a radial tire offroad.the SX's are hardcore but get horrible wear on the street.run the TSL's with 30 psi on the street and drop them to what ever you pressure you wheel with and the will last like a fawkin timex.

I agree with TJ.. although I like the PJ tires, I'll never run them just because of cost alone. For that extra cost you can spend quite a bit more money on a) balancing or b) bead locks to get the SX's to run nice on the street.

The Swamper has done you good so far. I know I will never buy another brand. I do find it strange that the letters PJ on the Parnelli's make the best tread design. Maybe they do work but they are still a whimpy radial. I'd stick with the bias ply.

I like my Parnelli's over all. I wish I would have gotten the 37s instead of the 35s though for obvious reasons. They are really soft so they stick really well but I don't expect them to last very long. Now that it's not my primary vehicle, it should help them last a little longer. If you drive it on the road too which it sounds like you do, I think they are a good tire. Just don't expect to get the kind of mileage out of them that you would with a MT or MTR. I agree with all the hard core guys that they are not as good as a bias ply off road, but I would rather not have to deal with bias plys on a daily driver.

The PJ's are available in a 38, but only in a 14.50 width.

The PJ's aren't as wimpy as you may think. Yes they are weaker than the SX's-every other tire is! In the Hills last year I went through a section that had two very sharp ledges that you have to squeeze between. I actually shaved off a full sidebiter because the tires' sidewalls don't give very willingly. My brothers Parnellis' sidewall pushed in about 4 inches, didn't loose the bead, and didn't even cut. We had to stand there and stare at it for about 10 minutes in disbelief. I think what is happening here, is that I know I should run SX's, but I want to try the Parnellis. So apparently I am just waiting for one of you guys to say "Go 'Nelli's!"
And the other half to that ledge story is that I cut off a sidebiter, but I was able to crank into the ledge and pull up on it, while the PJ's couldn't grab.

Actually I think they are 15.50. A friend at work has these on his SuperDuty. They look even wider than that. Parnelli's run true to size like most swampers.

dude listen to me i would not steer you wrong i drive my shit everyday...well....when its not on jacks and me fawking with it but thats another story:D but back to the tsl's they not only will last you longet then even a mtrand the mt's are real soft but you dont have loud noises on the road and they ballance perfect no joke .also you know you here a bunch of guys talking about flat spots well not on them and if they do well it will very cold out side and by the time you get down the street they are gone (flat spots)unlike the sx's which are steel belted fawkin spot more then a woman going on her rag:p
bottom line tsl swampers i would wheel with any other

Get the dirt grips, they seem like they would work well for you from what you have said. Also its just good to try new things, worst thing that could happen is you will just have to buy some SX's when the PJ's wear out.
