: Chev 350
pitter 04-27-2002, 01:12 AM Ok my friend has decided on a chev 350 vortec, only if it gets around 20/mpg, is this true, he will be running a NV4500 and stock gears in his 1971 cruiser which are 4:11's right. So is this a good choice? what kind of milege do u think he will get on city and highway?

orangefj45 04-28-2002, 08:04 PM i hate to be rude but that is one dumbass question :flipoff2: !
if you're ( or your buddy is ) so concerned about gas milage then opt for the corolla, not the landcruiser.
yes, you're gonna get decent milage but it all depende on your tire size, driving habbits,.......blahblahblah.
the vortec will probably offer you the best milage out of any engine swap you can do and will provide more than enough power. that's all you need to worry about. :rasta:

Well I guess some of us are not as rich as u, and can not afford to spend lots of money on gas instead of arb's. I personaly would want the best fuel miledge possible that a raised up cruiser would get, what would u rather have a gas guzzler or arb's hmmmm i wonder... :flipoff2:
MVANDYKE 04-29-2002, 08:08 PM Sorry guy but I'm with Orange45 if you gotta ask about gas mileage you CAN'T AFFORD TO DRIVE A CRUISER. if you want gass mileage buy a kia sportage.
pitter 04-29-2002, 08:22 PM hey maybe a kia sportage would be beter than your rig off road too. (probably) wow calm down u guys he was just wondering what kind of milege u guys got with 350 cruisers, because my friend in his chev gets 8 mpg and thats horrible, odviously your not going to spend over 15 000cnd on a cruiser to get 8mpg. So he wants people to post their milege so he knows to go for a chev 350 or diesel.
Peabody 04-29-2002, 08:28 PM You know, I'm in the planning stages of my DD FJ60 build up w/ a 350 and gas milage hasn't even factored into it. I know it's gonna suck, deal with it or buy a Honda. :flipoff2:
BarnWrencher 04-29-2002, 08:35 PM I understand exactly where he's coming from I just dropped a vortec in mine and am very curious to see how thirsty she's gonna be. Actually it sounds like were on the same page here except my motors in. Mine is a 72 with a vortec and an NV4500. If you have any questions let me know my installation went easy as pie my only problem was the jerk wads at the yard who gave me the wrong computer. I really don't think you're going to get any better mileage with anything else. I personally hope I'm going to get great mileage because once she's rolling she aint gonna stop. Hell, highwater, rain, sleet, or snow, I'm even thinking of selling my daily to get some more green for toys.
Land Crusher 04-29-2002, 08:47 PM I would also agree with every one else
but it is a interesting question.
I would use the 305 if I was concerned
about gas.
then use the toy truck trany transfer case
this would still give 5 gears
then a doubler made from a second toy truck
case.
then maybe a extra computer that will be set up
for gas millage.
I have seen the extra computer done on a
hot rod 1 computer=street 2nd=off road.
some one else have any other ideas ????
pitter 04-29-2002, 08:53 PM An Nv4500 is a 5 speed with an over drive and a granny first gear for more info on it go to www.NV4500.com thanx for the info guys.
pitter 04-29-2002, 08:54 PM I know its hard to get gas milege out of a tank but might as well try right. especially if u are doing a frame off and changing and fixing up everything.
dog walker 04-29-2002, 08:56 PM You should get 12-16mpg wth a Vortec, if you were to be using a carbed 350 with a quadrajet, then it would depend on your friends right foot.
My injected 302 (in my FJ40) gets about 18mpg. My FJ60 with 2F gets 12mpg.

orangefj45 04-29-2002, 09:49 PM sooner or later i'm gonna be a pain in some newbie's ass:mad: .
who said anything about arb's, first of all.
and second to that: if you can't afford the gas then how can you afford a vortec 350, never mind the harness and the rest of the crap to go along with it. :flipoff2:
i'm certainly not "rich"! my rig has a 1974 crate 350 motor in it from a conversion done during that same year. if i wanted to dump a vortec in it i could, but i do have priorities!:mad3:
don't take it personal there newbie; it just cracks me up when people talk about building up a rig and then they worry about the mpg. the vortec is definetly a great choice. :smokin:

well thanx for the input, don't take the newbie bashin to heart, I was just jokin around, u guys sure have some good info on here thanx my friend much appriciates it.
woody 04-30-2002, 05:55 AM damn...the NV4500 is a 5-speed?!?!? DAMN....I just gave two of those away....figgered they were automatics and weren't worth nuthin..... :flipoff2:
Seriously tho, don't expect any better than 15-17 or so mpg with the V8 and a light foot. Diving style will effect your mileage more than anything. And this is a 5000# brick driving down the freeway. I have noticed that running 75mph with my minitruck versus 65 will drop me at least 1mpg. Do some research and find out what that motor got stock in the truck it came out of....then knock about 20% off that number for Cruiser aerodynamics. My guess is the Chevy truck got around 20-21 on a good day, so figger around 16 and be happy.
patter?
Medusa 04-30-2002, 07:51 AM Geez, I am almost afraid to jump in with the information originally requested, but what the hell.... With the 5.7L Vortec and NV4500 in my FJ40, I get 14-18 in town and country roads and up to 20 on the freeway (60 mph @ 1600 rpm).
With that said, gas mileage was the last thing on my mind when I bought that first Vortec. But man, after this thread, I wonder what kind of mileage I will ge twith the truggy:D :D :D
cardinal fang 04-30-2002, 07:51 AM A 350, no matter what configuration will get from 10 with a carb to 17 if your really really lucky. I am putting a carbed 350 in my fj55 and do not expect to get any better mpg out of it than I had with my 2F, 11mpg. I know some get around 17 with a vortec, but I don't think that is the norm. It really does depend on the vehicle and the driving habits of the owner.
sixty 04-30-2002, 11:09 AM having had a few 2f'd cruisers & a few 350'd cruisers I'll chime in here. my 2f'd fj60 gets between 11 & 15 (mostly 13) my tbi 350 fj60 gets between 10 & 16 (mostly 11). gas mileage totally depends on how you drive & a 350'd cruiser is rarely driven light footed b/c its just is not that fun. a 2f'd cruiser HAS to be driven hard just to keep up w/ traffic. diesel would be the way to go but it will take probably 100k miles just to recover the added costs to convert it.
I say go vortec & then buy a yugo for daily driving so you can save up for ARB's :p
Land Crusher 04-30-2002, 05:27 PM damn newbe dosnt even read my reply then insults me buy implying that I dont know a nv4500 is a
5 speed.
And all I was trying to do was help.
maybe you should think about a xtera
:flipoff2:
pontiota 04-30-2002, 05:57 PM If it helps any my 98 PU with a 5.7 vortec gets from 12-15, 16 being my best, the window sticker said 13-17, I know its apples to oranges but as you can see it isn't the holy grail of gas mileage but it dose give you a ton of torque without being a pig.
