: Weekend report 10/9-10/10
Snoopy 09-09-2006, 08:22 AM WHEELED!
Well after cycling my camera off-on a couple billion times it started working again. So here are some pictures from the wheelin' trip.
Pulling off the trailers... The jeep buggy is Mike, a local customer and friend. He's been trying to get me to go wheeling with him for 5 years. He started that buggy after his 73 CJ5 got too beat to bounce-back. We both finished about the buggies about the same time.

Saturday, work to catch up.
Diesel Smoke 09-09-2006, 08:45 AM So, Damian where the Flux Capacitor on that thing? I mean posting from the future and all, it's gotta have one. Looks like you guys will be having alot of fun in a month and so nice to see Summer weather holding well into October. BTW, did you happen to catch the winning lottery numbers while you were there?
:flipoff2:
Damn I just got out of bed, nothing to report yet, haven't even had breakfast.

 I will reply about how cool you wheeling pictures are next month:flipoff2:
Urban Wheeler 09-09-2006, 09:26 AM Nothing yet, got the frequency drive for my lathe, (with no control pad) still need a belt, tool holder and tooling, bought some 12 inch id tube to cut down and make anti coning rings with, I just need a way to cut them.
Snoopy 09-09-2006, 09:29 AM Hahahaah ~ I totally missed that.
DOH!
EDIT: FIXED
Scout Dork 09-09-2006, 09:30 AM Damian, I read your build up page, but didn't see anything info on your H1 rims. Did you re-center/widen them? Your hubs don't stick out like your friends mikes.

Mike was lucky enough to get a SRW D60, I have a DRW (aka Dually front end) D60. The difference is that the DRW D60 have 4ish" spacers on them from the factory.
Both Mike and I run STOCK hummer rims. He's got 39.5" IROKs I run 42s. So he is 8-9" more narrow than I am. That's what you are seeing in the hubs.
Scout Dork 09-09-2006, 10:23 AM Thanks
I guess I should have added something to the weekend report. I've been doing alot of web wheeling.
Finished this week with collecting parts for a tf727/np231/d300 doubler. should only cost about $2600 after I buy a tig welder:D well, maybe I will just go to the community college and weld it for free, can't really justify welding about 6"
I'm also collecting parts now for a spring over/reversal. I picked up a chevy 44/14 bolt. I should be able to build them for the cost of a dana 60 front.

Post some pic of those parts you collected as I would like to go that route too. Not sure what your welding but if your going to college they like to call it GTAW. In class we just went over how to weld thinner gauge aluminum to 1" thick aluminum plate.
Weekend report. I have to "work" and surf the internet, I would much rather be making spare parts for the CON run next week. 4+ hours until I can start working on my chit.
Snoop those are some nice shots, bet those runs are a bitch in the rain. Get rid of that flat black :barf: ( no offence BLK Scout 800)

It's the Box4Rocks kit. Same as Rust. White?
You cut the front output of a np231 and Heli-Arc in a aluminum slug. Sorry, I'm only 64 units short of my cosmetology degree.

Since I've needed to rebuild/repair my lowered gear 727, I decided to up-grade to the jeep tail housing and go with doubler kit.
Who re-centered H1 rims, yeah I know of the one place, and the $$$statz place, are there any others.
Or you don't have to do it with a chevy 44 and high steer arms? Still researching.

binderbound 09-09-2006, 11:28 PM I had planned to re-seal my T-case but it wasnt on the top of my list. I was running wiring for rock lights and saw this...
http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/250/tcasecrackgz2.jpg
So, I'll bolt on my un-tested spare T-case and bolt this up as my spare. So yesterday was strip the scout down for T-case R&R.
Today, Dieselsmoke and I built him a traction bar for the crawler. 1.25x.25 DOM for the bars, blue torch axle bracket, 1.75x.24 for the cross member.

It seemed to take forever. little shit fought us the whole way. I'm happy none the less.
Tomorrow, cut fire wood in the AM. Replace T-case in the PM.

thats a lot of extra weight on that track bar... you would of been better off cuttin some more tube and stickin it in there... owell
cant really see too well but you can see that there is not a whole chunk of steel there

Harvester of Sorrow 09-10-2006, 07:31 PM Friday:::
Got my boys way to late in the afternoon...
Saturday:::
Spent some great time with my boys...
Sunday:::
Got a call from the ex-bitch saying that she wanted to head back to *****(city she lives in) early so that they could take care of some stuff. So basically I had to give the boys up 3 hours earlier than normal...and cancel on some pre-made plans with some fellow Pirate4x4.com board members.... Something that I fucking despise doing....:mad3:
Soooooo I have spent the past 4-1/2 hours taking out my aggressions on getting the Scout ready for next weekend:::
Found this in my winch problems:::

Then replaced my Warn Premium hubs because one of them lost its guts on the trail somewhere. What should have taken an hour...turned into 3...
Tomorrow will be more work in prep for the Naches run....
Diesel Smoke 09-10-2006, 11:07 PM thats a lot of extra weight on that track bar... you would of been better off cuttin some more tube and stickin it in there... owell
Huh? Extra weight? Sure it could ahve been done lighter, buy why? The weight is low on the the truck and it's only another 40-45#'s, hardly even worth worrying about. I doubt plating it really added that much more weight then adding a few piece of extra tube, remember it's 1.25x.25 wall tubing, not the lightest tube around. Would the maybe 5# saving worth the time and effort it would have taken for tube? Nope, no reason.
As for my weekend:
Saturday=Traction Bar
Sunday=Picking up the Scout in the morning and cutting wood the rest of the day for my parents.

I couldnt have said it better. I have seen more bent, broken, and plain ol' fucked traction bars than I should have. I wanted this to be the last traction bar ever built for this rig. I just hope the welds on the axle tube hold up. If its coming apart anywhere, its there:eek:
Eagle-Mark 09-10-2006, 11:32 PM http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/9585/tractionbarrearabvero6.jpg That's what I had in mind for one. Is that lower than the drive shaft? Then adding one on the other side on the rear but only up half way, no front connection. Then you could have a skid on it to protect drive shaft. One big skid under the pumpkin. You'd have to leave room or make removable for access to u-joint pinion yoke.
Does your shock get hot?

The angle of the picture is making things look out of wack. The muffler output misses the shock completly. It may get hot, but I don't know yet as I haven't run with this set up. Ths traction bar hangs no lower then the driveline and the bracket is no lower then the pumpkin. Getting the correctly placement of the bracket was by far the hardest part. Thing are too tight on that side of the axle and as usual, we didn't have enough time to move any of it. The shock mounts are complete shot on the housing, so they are on the list of things to fix/move. Don't get me wrong, they work, the mount is just trashed.
When you are talking about making things removeable, always consider in your design that you'll be laying in 3" of mud and 20 degree weather. That way when you are laying in 3" of mud in 20 degree weather it's a quick and easy process.
BinderMike 09-11-2006, 02:05 AM Found out why my offroad lights didn't work despite the solid-looking fuse: it wasn't. Dont know why, but that thing had a higher ohm rating than a tire does. Replaced, good as new.
Topped off my differentials: Front is kinda milky, rear oil is black. Eventually, I will get the seals and just fill them fresh. Kinda pointless right now when it sits all but 1 day out of every 2 months, and that is usually around the parking lot to keep it lubed. Diff covers dont look the same, assumed they were both D44's.
Bought spark plugs, will replace when I get the wires, rotor, and cap next paycheck.
Found out radio was source of voltage leak. The radio chassis was hot (13 volts...)
Found out rear U-joints need replacing bad, but the shaft removal looks easy enough...
Still haven't found out where my brake fluid is going...no apparent leaks found.
Steering got tight when I tightened the steering shaft coupler: If I hadn't, I would have lost steering. 1 bolt was hanging on by 1/2 a turn...
Extended my ever-legnthening list of shit to do to this money pit...
Harvester of Sorrow 09-11-2006, 07:41 AM Extended my ever-legnthening list of shit to do to this money pit...

Don't worry dude the list never gets shorter...mine hasn't in 14 years...and over 3 different rigs...:)

That too funny, I was trying to get my rear skid plate back on after all the mods and it was in need of some trimming here and there. I took like 5 trial fits to get everything cut so I could get it on and off without having to wiggle it up past the springs.
On that traction bar, is half the BTF bracket welded to the pumpkin and the other half on the tube?

I don't see how more tube would do the job. The plating is an ideal way to add beef with minimal weight.
You could get by with just sheetmetal and still reap the benefits of plating it.
I keep thinking about building a traction bar, but then talk myself out of it "Just one more thing to cut off and grind/clean-up if/when I link it".. :D
Saturday I went to a Rally at the Capitol to try to convince the Gov and Attorney General to STOP supporting the Clinton Roadless Rule. Even got roped into a short speech..
Of course, the press wasn't there.. it wasn't a Wilderness Association show, so why bother, right?
Stopped and looked at another IH.. do I NEED this 1973 1210 WagonMaster?

Rusty wheel arches (pic is 2 yrs old, and the bondo is rusting off over the rear arches), custom under-bed toolbox (and bed replacement).. 392, close T19, open knuckle drum D44.
I almost bought it 6 years ago for $2500.. it's now $1500 and I'm waffling.. it's all that little crap it needs/will need.. and fuel prices bein' the way they are.
Sunday I finished building an ugly bumper on the front of the race rig and mounted up the second set of 7100 Bilsteins.
Started rebuilding the Race Runners.. but mostly spent the weekend dealing with the 2 month old :D ... since the race scheduled for Sunday was "postponed" as of Friday. :mad3:

The short bumper painted black was already there - I fouled up when I was building it and it came out too close and too short, but I was in a hurry and needed it done to protect the radiator, so there it was.
I wanted something with a little more "reach" for "nerfing" so the new tube got bent up.
Need to do something else for the rear, too.. bumper back there is more decorative than anything else.
Harvester of Sorrow 09-11-2006, 11:43 AM Ugly bumber....
You can say that again :flipoff2:
1500.00 for that thing...wow. I would be all over that if it was semi local.

Snoopy 09-11-2006, 03:09 PM Nice pictures snoopy. You kill me though, that bad ass buggy and you still don't have a winch on it! :flipoff2:
Don't want to jinks myself, but I run 2 of the hardest trails in CO (one twice) and I haven't needed a winch yet. Besides, that would mean I'd have to spend more money on Rusty.
Knock on wood though ~ Rusty's climbed everything I've driven it at, I'm sure a winch will be needed soon. Found a 9K no name winch with a 5.5 HP motor for $250 (new). May have to go get that....price is definately right.

I like the flat black. It really makes the red stand out. Besides, when it gets bonked, I can touch it up easy!
Speaking of rain. That run is closed in the rain, and it started to sprinkle about 5 minutes after we pulled out of the exit. So far so good. ;)

YellowIH 09-12-2006, 11:24 AM What pipe is that you are using? The bends look good, no pinching
1" 1/4" ID sch 40 water pipe. (1" 3/4" OD IIRC.) No idea besides that. They are for extending my current rocksliders, basically making a set of steps for after I get the SSII inserts so I can climb in!!!!
I did a little destructive testing on a scrap piece of tube with an 8lb sledge as a former wood splitting farm boy.
First hit on an open end yielded slight deformation.
Second hit ovalled the tube slightly...but I knocked the hell out of it. :grinpimp:
Third egged it.
Should have taken pics.... :shaking: Seems it should be tough enough.
