: XJ Stretch -->111"
RockcontrolXJ 09-10-2006, 11:54 PM So the shitbox started gettin a little tippy with 37's and somewhere around 7" of lift i decided to bring it down a little.
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/IMG_4205.jpg
I also wasn't happy with the Rockcontrol bellyskid and radius arm brackets that hung 4" below the framerails. Even with a smooth belly i got hung up on everything. I was never very happy with my rock sliders either. They survived some brutal beating but they were at least an inch below the stock rocker. The truck rolled into the driveway with these goals:
Lower
Wider
Better departure
Better breakover
Dual cases
Higher rockers
Heres what's happened
I started out cuttin the rear
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/Wheelbase%20Stretch/IMG_4366.jpg
Then moved the spring mounts back 10" and up about 3"
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/Wheelbase%20Stretch/IMG_4367.jpg
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/Wheelbase%20Stretch/IMG_4368.jpg
And slung the rear axle back in
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/Wheelbase%20Stretch/IMG_4375.jpg
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/Wheelbase%20Stretch/IMG_4372.jpg
RockcontrolXJ 09-11-2006, 12:00 AM This brought the truck down 3.5" in the rear but my cut wasn't going to be enough. Out came the sawzall and some tube
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/Wheelbase%20Stretch/IMG_4382.jpg
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/Wheelbase%20Stretch/IMG_4386.jpg
Time to tub it
Ghetto brake
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/Wheelbase%20Stretch/IMG_4388.jpg
And because i suck with sheetmetal i kept it all simple
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/Wheelbase%20Stretch/IMG_4389.jpg
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/Wheelbase%20Stretch/IMG_4390.jpg
The huge hole in the floor is for the gas tank.
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/Gas%20tank%20relocate/13.jpg
Aside from finish welding the rear is all laid out.
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/Wheelbase%20Stretch/IMG_4403.jpg
RockcontrolXJ 09-11-2006, 12:07 AM Along the way i chopped the rockers

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/IMG_4397.jpg
some simple tube sliders
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/IMG_4406.jpg
Up to 25" under the doors
freerider15 09-11-2006, 12:18 AM Holy shit I think you just did exactly what in my not-so-far-future plans. Looks great! I'de like to see some finished up pics at some point.
RockcontrolXJ 09-11-2006, 12:30 AM Now with the new ride height my belly clearance really sucked. Only 17" under the skid and the radius arms were almost parallel with the ground.
Out with the old
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/Flat%20BellySkid/IMG_4416.jpg
Started on a new crossmember
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/Flat%20BellySkid/IMG_4409.jpg
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/Flat%20BellySkid/IMG_4413.jpg
This moved the trans mount up 2.75". The crawer box barely cleared the floor, so i pushed the tunnel up with a floor jack so i had 1/2" clearance.
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/Flat%20BellySkid/IMG_4420.jpg
Then the floor got cut to clear the second case clocked up flat.

From underneath
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/Flat%20BellySkid/IMG_4424.jpg
And then the whole drivetrain was mocked up
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/Flat%20BellySkid/IMG_4425.jpg
I stripped the guts out of a 231 i had on the floor for the mockup. Glad i did cause i had that damn case in and out 6 times today.
Heres the rest of the crossmember i came up with. Hopefully i can pick up the 1/4 steel this week to skin the whole thing.
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/Flat%20BellySkid/IMG_4427.jpg
This is with the whole drivetrain installed......21" at the bottom of the plate.
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/Flat%20BellySkid/IMG_4419.jpg
The new radius arms will mount to the front of the trans crossmember and will transition straight into the skid. I'll post pics later this week when i get the front axle slung under and suspended.
tweba99 09-11-2006, 08:11 AM Really nice work on the rear stretch.
SWAG MFG 09-11-2006, 08:53 AM I dig it :smokin:
squirriljeep 09-11-2006, 09:20 AM Why didn't you just flip the springs in the rear?
84rocktoy 09-11-2006, 11:44 AM Are you going to strenghten the frame? Ever had any problems with it?
RockcontrolXJ 09-11-2006, 12:15 PM Why didn't you just flip the springs in the rear?
I still would have had the shitty factory shackle angle, the truck wouldn't be as low, and i wanted more than 5" of stretch.
Are you going to strenghten the frame? Ever had any problems with it?
I boxed the "framerails" under the doors a long time ago but my unibody is still twisted like a pretzel. Doors don't close quite right, quarter panels are buckled out. When i tubbed the rear i pulled the quarter panels back in so the hatch closes better now but i should have tied it together with a cage long before i started beatin it.
ashmanjeepXJ 09-11-2006, 12:51 PM This is with the whole drivetrain installed......21" at the bottom of the plate.
Are gonna keep the 37s or go bigger?
sceep 09-11-2006, 12:53 PM VERY nice work.
you shouldah just dovetailed and cheromanchee'd it while you were at it. :smokin:
Brian1 09-11-2006, 12:58 PM That is turning out killer! Keep up the pics.
andyr354 09-11-2006, 01:43 PM Whats holding the tube rocker in place? Is it just welded to the sheetmetal or anchored in to something else?
Looks nice so far. Maybe fill in the area between the door and rear fender tube with some sheet metal.
Nordic1 09-11-2006, 02:46 PM Nice setup
baseballneal86 09-11-2006, 03:09 PM Lookin great so far. Couple questions for ya...
1: What kind of shifter setup are you planning for the 231/231 combo?
2: Is your drivers seat still gonna fit with that much sheet metal covering your tunnel now?
3: What axles are you running? I think I see a HP44 up front, and maybe an 8.8 rear?
Anyway, looks :smokin:. Gives me a lot of inspiration and new ideas for my own XJ.

2: Is your drivers seat still gonna fit with that much sheet metal covering your tunnel now?
3: What axles are you running? I think I see a HP44 up front, and maybe an 8.8 rear?
1. I'm gonna have to figure out shifters once the seat and console go back in. I'd like for them to both come through the original shifter hole, but i don't have enough clearance under the floor to run that. I'll post pics when i get the shifters figured out.
2. The driver's seat mounts got cut out to clear the second case. I'm planning to run the factory seat (i like my power accesories), i'll just have to build new brackets.
3. The Axles are a HP 44 and an 8.8 with 5.13's. The 8.8 has a mini spool in it right now, but i'm not sure if i'm gonna keep it. I should probably just order the c-clip eliminator and a full spool. I want to ARB the front but I have to get the truck a little closer to completion before i know if it will fit in the budget. I'll post some axle buildup pics in a little bit.
Are gonna keep the 37s or go bigger?
Keepin the 37's, don't know if i'll ever go bigger with this truck. My final goal with this one is to have a decently capable trail rig i can comfortably drive (read quiet) 75+ on the freeway with the A/c blastin.
RockcontrolXJ 09-11-2006, 04:18 PM The axles
A friend of mine was parting out a '78 F150 Ext cab (leaf sprung with 5 lug outers) so i picked up the front axle.
I started cleaning up the 44 and cut the knuckles
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/Axles/DSCN0286.jpg
Rocked the c's back 7* with a BFH
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/Axles/DSCN0312.jpg
Welded 'em back up
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/Axles/DSCN0314.jpg
While i had the welder out, i burned the tube into the housing too
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/Axles/DSCN0316.jpg
8.8's are notorious for spinning tubes so i welded it up too, and ground the lip off the bottom edge

Off to get gears
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/Axles/DSCN0323.jpg

Pretty cool..but alot of work for 2 more inches!
Flipped rear springs...shackle hanger relocated...4.5" springs..37" tires
Starboard M 09-11-2006, 07:42 PM Is that a full width 8.8?
Are you going to doing another radius arm or something else? How are you going to do the upper drivers side mount? Are you coil buckets the same width as stock even with the leaf sprung 44?

I have seen your rig before, i like it and i got a lot of good ideas from it. The reason i went so crazy on the rear is so i could get my shit lower more than just longer. Just guessing from the pics but i think mine will be 2" maybe 3" lower than yours.

Full width 8.8
I'm gonna try to build a 3 link in the front if i can figure out how to package it. However, I don't have a lot of room between my upper control arm mounts and the floor. If not i'll build another radius arm setup.
Coil buckets are the same width as stock.
Do you or ty have any of these spring mounts left?
Last ones....
ohiozj 09-12-2006, 06:20 AM i love the way your rear fender area looks and how it tied into the rockers. ...

RockcontrolXJ 09-14-2006, 02:51 PM how concerned are you with you rear shackles affecting you departure angle?
Not very, i'm gonna be dragging the back of the springs on some dropoffs, but they're not any lower than they were before. If i was concerned about it i'd link it, but i really don't want to take the time do that on this truck.
AZFJ - Your shackle angle scares me.
There's nothing wrong with that shackle angle, i'm sure it just gives the rear springs a ton of droop. With the right use of limit straps i'll bet it works well, and rides smooth too.
Were/Are those leaf springs used as Y-links?
I'm not sure what your talking about.......My radius arms are 2x2x.25 box tube. It has about the same bending moment and weight as similar size DOM, but is much cheaper.

AZFJ - Your shackle angle scares me.
Not my shackle angle..it belongs to a buddy who bought it from another buddy of mine...This XJ gets it done...no limiting straps just ant-axle wrap bar..
It has tons of flex..little to no wheel hop...just a little rear stear when flexed out..but will climb about any rock face!
Yes he made this unassisted!
crappy pic above..sorry..but you get the point,..I think he has the right formula for a bad ass grocery getter..we like to call it the "short bus"
He made this too..actually..he made it look easy
Fryphax 09-20-2006, 03:21 PM Definitely respectable ability, not something I'm going to be trying in my XJ at this point. I'm probabaly going to be stealing some ideas from this thread in the near future.

RockcontrolXJ 09-22-2006, 01:34 PM your not gonna scrap that "old" custom LA set up are ya?!
Naww, i've been able to reuse most of the brackets and i used most of the old control arm material in my new arms. I'll post pics when i get new batteries for the camera.
Here's some random 231 tech for ya too.....
I'm using a 231 rear case because they're easy to find in the junkyard, and are pretty small. However they have their shortcomings, mostly chain stretch and cases breaking. Theres not a whole lot i can do about the case strength besides a skidplate, but they're easy to widechain from the junkyard.
Find a 231C and strip the front yoke, front outputshaft, chain, and sprocket on the mainshaft.
Heres the Chevy chain (right) next to a jeep chain
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/231/DSCN0976.jpg
and a chevy yoke (right) next to a jeep yoke
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/231/DSCN0975.jpg
Just replace the jeep main shaft sprocket with the chevy piece, replace the jeep front input shaft with the chevy shaft, and the chain will fall in. The yoke isn't mandatory, but the chevy one is much beefier. You won't be able to use your stock jeep front driveshaft with the chevy yoke as it has a different bolt pattern (wider). This doesn't matter to me as i'm getting new shafts front and rear anyway.
Another aside heres a chevy mainshaft right next to a stock jeep mainshaft
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/231/DSCN0979.jpg
And a chevy mainshaft next to my AA SYE mainshaft

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/231/DSCN0977.jpg
That chevy shaft is going in my roommate's SAS s10. Its a beefy peice, but its too long to use in a short wheelbase jeep (20" overall case length. 27" with both of his cases  ).
Anyway, i did make quite a bit of progress this week, i'll post it up as soon as i get my camera back up.
soup4856 09-23-2006, 07:56 AM I am looking at putting a crawl box on my XJ. I already have a flipped 300 but I need some lower gears. Are you going to run a carrier bearing on the front t-case crossmember? Looking at mine I think at full droop the drive shaft would hit the front crossmember even as clocked up as it is.

Are you going to run a carrier bearing on the front t-case crossmember? Looking at mine I think at full droop the drive shaft would hit the front crossmember even as clocked up as it is.
I'm going to try to notch my crossmember enough to run a one peice shaft but the more i look at it the more i think i'm gonna need a two piece. I've got to cycle the axle to find out for sure.
Some progress this week. Got the control arms and steering set up.
I used Chevy tie rod ends and 1.5"x.219" DOM. I didn't feel like dropping the cash for hy-steer so i just reamed the knuckles from the top and flipped the steering up.
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/Axles/DSCN0983.jpg
I built a jig on my welding table and welded up my bent control arms to clear the "frame" rails and still mount high on the trans crossmember.

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/Flat%20BellySkid/DSCN0992.jpg
Heres what i came up with for an upper link........
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/Axles/DSCN0982.jpg
Don't know if i'm happy with the upper link yet. It'll work, but it looks like ass. Unfortunately i don't think I can package a true three link cause the trucks so damn low, and i still need to snake a full exhaust over the control arms.
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/Flat%20BellySkid/DSCN0985.jpg
This is how the truck sits right now at ride height. With the full drivetrain installed. I think i've got the clearance i wanted:D.

you are a good guy for backing up your friend, but this thread is not the place for any of what just went on between you all. if there was ever a problem in the first place you should have taken care of it then, and if not you know where to go on this forum if you have a gripe, and its not in this thread.
i know brian personally and he is a good guy, not out to get anyone, so please stop cluttering this thread with negative remarks towards something that he may never even been involved in in the first place.

sorry rockcontrolXJ, nice build but this childish bull shit from these two ruined it for me.
I doubt you even know the HALF of the situation behind Sierra Rock Control and that whole fiasco. Strangely enough, I still have a set of their coil buckets chilling in my garage waiting for an axle swap. They're pretty sweet. Too bad so many people got the shaft on that whole situation. Regardless, good work on the rig... I don't think the uppers are ghetto either. If it works, run it!
RockcontrolXJ 09-28-2006, 06:05 PM Well just like any project i've reached the point of being burned out and done nitpicking all the little crap i want to get done. I've finished all the major fab work that i'm gonna do at this time around so the whole truck is gettin blown apart for finish welding and prep for final assembly. Heres how she sits as of today.

No way. I'll have to build a crossmember to mount the shocks to. I'm going to wait until i can get the truck on an RTI ramp to cycle the rear suspension so i can figure out where the shocks need to go.

bp95yj 10-02-2006, 12:34 PM you might want think about skinning that gas tank crossmember( if you haven't already thought about it) . I could definitely see a rock wedging between the tube and popping a hole.
baseballneal86 10-02-2006, 02:06 PM Couple more questions for ya...
1. Are you planning on running a traction bar?
2. On your control arms, are you gonna gusset them at all? It looks like they are just butt-welded where the bend is.

1. Yes, the spring wrap on this sucker would kill driveshafts
2. Already done, they've been strapped with a 9"x1.25x.25" flat stock. I'll post pics when i get a chance

I probably should skid the gas tank, but i don't think i'll get around to it before i start wheelin it. my old tank took one hell of a beating (only held 10gallons when i pulled it) and it never ruptured. Bad excuse i know.........

RockcontrolXJ 11-11-2006, 01:51 AM Well here's a little update for ya'll.
The weather has forced me to put the truck in my small ass 1 car garage. It's a little cramped but dry and i can work on the rig at nite now. The motor swap went smoothly and its all ready to fire.
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/Wheelbase%20Stretch/IMG_4626.jpg
Spent the cash for some MORE bombproof motor mounts. They beat the crap out of the stock mounts (which came out in two pieces each).
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/Wheelbase%20Stretch/IMG_4627.jpg
Here's the reason for the new motor. This is what happens to a 4.0L when you hydrolock it at 4500rpm. I think i might make this my new shifter handle :D

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/Wheelbase%20Stretch/IMG_4638.jpg
So theres how the truck sits as of tonite. Looking forward to driving it again soon. My goal for the weekend is to have it move and stop under its own power, we'll see if that happens.

That sucks, I have a similiar situation on mine. I think I'm going to hard mount the exhaust to the crossmembers and put a piece of flexible woven exhaust tube between that and the downtube...might be a good solution for you as well. Anything else I'm sure would rattle and be annoying.

hes trying to snake his 2 piece driveline through the other side (the picture is looking from the rear forward on the passenger side, you can see the drivers side drop D44 on the pic). seeing the truck in person hell have no problem snaking a 2.25 through there. whats going to be tricky is getting the pipe not to move around too much when everything torques under load. suposedly hes got some ideas on bushings to hold it all in place real night.:grinpimp: :grinpimp:

I think i accomplished my goals for the truck, she's low (4"lift), decently wide, i've got 22" at the belly (with no rock anchors), and the wheelbase ended up at 113".
Now all i need is hydro assist, cage, winch, superiors, ARB's, OBA, stroker, coilovers. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Tommy_Harrell 01-24-2007, 07:41 PM I was wondering how the 231/231 combo will work, as I was studying this for my own rig after seeing someone do it on NAXJA (http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=68223). I just can’t see how it would last long (even with a gentle right foot)
4.0 motor......................220 ft/lbs (at flywheel)
Torque converter............440 ft/lbs (front of Trans)
Aw4 first gear (2.80).......1232 ft/lbs (input of first case)
Range box low (2.72).......3351 ft/lbs (input of second case)
T-case low (2.72)...........9114 ft/lbs (driveshaft)
The 231 is only rated for 1885 ft/lbs of torque max, and its getting 3351 ft/lbs and that is in the 241 power range. The torque would be within reason if you keep the aw4 in second (1.50) @ 1795 ft/lbs. of course this is all "in theory" but I am very interested in how this setup holds together.
Tommy
Fawk Awph 01-24-2007, 11:03 PM im pretty sure the input that madrooster makes is stronger than stock, plus brain swapped out the bigger chain off a 241 for a little more beef.
you also have to realize these numbers you have are PEAK ratings, if course the motor doesnt put out 220 ft/lbs at 1000rpm, it may put out a third of that, and thats where hell be running most of time while crawler.

You have no clue how a torque converter works do you? It doesn't multiply the torque. If you have a 2000 rpm stall on your torque converter then transmission will get the torque that the engine creates at 2000 rpm.

actually is does multiply the torque. i suggest you read this. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torque_converter
its very informative about torque converters. so, most of what he posted it true under full accelleration, or peak HP/TQ situations. where the TC creates the most torque is if you were to bind up and give it some skinny pedal.

He did not use the chain from a 241, but the chain from a 231C (1/4 inch wider). The rated torque I used was for a 231, but even the 231HD is only rated for 1940 ft/lbs (similar to the 231C) (specifications found @ http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/specs/tranfer_case.htm).
I also realize that the numbers I used represent PEAK ratings. Take the 231HD (rated at 1940 ft/lbs) and work backwards to the flywheel and you would see that is 127 ft/lbs of torque coming from the motor. Look at this dyno chart and tell me where the 4.0 makes 127 ft/lbs of torque or more. (http://www.hypertech.com/images/dynocharts/jeep9699.jpg)
granted this data might be adjusted to make hypertech look better, but it’s still probably good enough for this discussion.

outlaw.308 07-16-2007, 08:33 PM Damn, looks like everything turned out great. Did everything work out the way you had hoped/planned? Looks awesome.
smurison14 07-16-2007, 11:00 PM build some half doors and that thing will be badass!
numtel 07-16-2007, 11:29 PM build some half doors and that thing will be badass!
The door mounts are all buggered up now:eek: It's going to take some massaging to get some doors back on there:grinpimp:
Where'd you put the rest of the pics?
My frame is cracked in way more places than just that spot that separated. I'm going to have to replace that whole section...I just boogered it back together for high lakes this weekend :)
alphaOffroad 07-17-2007, 02:58 PM I dig it! Gotta love the tire stuffage! Nice work.
tigerxj 07-18-2007, 04:16 PM a little tire stuff

Man, that shackle setup works perfectly. Those things look like they have a huge range of motion. you did a great job on the rear. notice any side effects with the shackle moving that much? any complaints about your rear setup?
kenny

So its halfdoors that make it badass??? I think a cage a chromos are next, instead of more sheetmetal to collect dents.

Fawk Awph 01-09-2008, 11:10 PM he blew the tranny in either sept or oct and the truck hasnt moved since. but i do remember him saying he did the chain swap from the chevy xcase.

No problems as of yet, but i did blow the trans a couple months ago. The 231's are holding up but i worry about front output on the second case, so i drive it accordingly. All in all i've been pretty happy with the performance of the truck, however for the time being it just sits at my folks house 3 hrs away and rots. . . . .

Is the gas tank just supporting itself from that lip and tacked onto the body? Have any of the welds cracked from the body flexing?
rocknbronco 02-25-2008, 04:59 PM Nice build up.
Chili Palmer 02-25-2008, 09:49 PM What did you do about the rear shocks? I'm thinking about flipping my rear leafs around out back...
Keepin the 37's, don't know if i'll ever go bigger with this truck. My final goal with this one is to have a decently capable trail rig i can comfortably drive (read quiet) 75+ on the freeway with the A/c blastin.
So just how quiet is that thing on the highway...:grinpimp:
Bump for a great build...

I tacked the tank to my welding table to straighten it before it got dropped into the 1x frame. Its held down with 1/4" self tappers and some 1/8" tabs.
What did you do about the rear shocks? I'm thinking about flipping my rear leafs around out back...
Still no rear shocks :smokin:, you have to ask numtel about how it bounces down trails....

Nordic1 02-26-2008, 12:49 AM Hows my axle shaft doing? :flipoff2: Nice Toy

I bet it runs nice and smooth down the desert washes :D
Did you do anything in the front wheel wells; i.e. remove some sheet metal? I'm assuming you've pounded the pinch seem down but is that it, or did you take some metal out for better clearance?
And what kind of filler neck/top did you use; it almost looks like a TJ in the pics?
Thanks
plasticmanhey 02-26-2008, 02:49 PM I am not a big fan of XJs for the most part...but I really like what you have done, I like the custom work. Nice build.
BeefCakeScout 09-28-2008, 06:16 PM That thing turned out BAD A$$. makes me want another XJ
And makes me glad I have one just getting started:flipoff2:
supernatural 10-16-2008, 09:16 AM any more pics and detail of the gas tank tuck? I'm looking for ideas, and want to make a locking storage compartment around my raised gas tank enclosure. Thanks.
calipup72 10-16-2008, 05:18 PM nice build is this xj in chico i would like to check it out a little closer if i could

Well if you do hang out with Brian and see the XJ... If he has a pink axle shaft in the 8 lug 44, GRAB IT. Fawker owes it back to me :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

Haha. Come get it Chase, the rest of the heep is getting parted out, and i'm gonna need a narrow width axle for the new 5 so i've got no need for your shafts anymore. I'm still surprised the only shafts i didn't break in that axle were yours . . . .
Pre4runner 12-08-2008, 09:55 AM Very nice looking rig. I like how your rear tube fender turned out. Currently stretching mine to 110" and will be doing something simular in the rear
jbjustin 02-18-2009, 06:51 PM very nice man.
i recently swapped in some 63" chevy leafs all around and i ended up with a wheelbase of 112". i really dig how you did the tank the back and the comp cut fenders, came our real nice.
i got away with not having to put my gas tank in the rear because i inboarded the rear springs and mounted the shackle boxes on the underside of the "framerails". i cut the fenders so they would work but i think i might end up doing something like you did.
definitely a BIG THUMBS UP for you buddy.
IslanderXJ 02-19-2009, 12:54 PM Rubicon Express XJ 4.5" lift springs, with a couple leaves replaced with stock stuff
Looks great! what kind of rear springs?
I was wondering what kind of leafs your running?
Read... :flipoff2:
94OHIOXJ 02-19-2009, 01:05 PM Just curious why you didn't go with a fuel cell instead of building all that to use the stock tank?
Amazing build btw. Badass.
BigPete 09-29-2009, 11:17 AM http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/Wheelbase%20Stretch/IMG_4633.jpg
This is a real good build and hope you have been able to swap a new transmission in and wheel it. I just found it through another thread that had a link to this one.
I was thinking of raising the tank in my 2dr and mounting the spare tire on top of the tank cage. I don't have this even close to build stage yet (just planning a theory crafting on paper and in my head atm until I get some more $$), but would like some measurements if you could from the bottom of the rear windows to the top of the tank cage? and if its not too much trouble if you could toss one of your tires on top of the tank cage to see if the total height of the tire plus the tank are higher than the bottom of the window frame? I am assuming that you are running a 37x12.50 radial?
Tyler C 09-30-2009, 10:05 PM Dude, look 5 posts up. Its been parted out.
Fawk Awph 09-30-2009, 10:19 PM Dude, look 5 posts up. Its been parted out.
wrong
it just got sold again to another one of my friends, its even more trail ready now!
BigPete 10-01-2009, 11:19 AM ahh, i must have gotten this thread confused with another thread that the guy was swaping a sbc and was parting the jeep drive train out.
Fawk Awph, are you able to get a answer to my question from your friend that has the jeep now? well if it still had the same tank setup.

Glad to hear that. This is one of my favorite XJ's out there.
proskier101 11-18-2009, 01:23 AM i know you dont own this, but how did you mount the gas tank?

When I did my tank like this I just took the straps from the bottom and put them over the top. Stupid easy and the tank doesn't budge.
