I've been thinking about replacing my current truck (dodge 1500) with a 2001 dodge 2500 V10 4x4 5spd that i'm going to look at tomorrow. The truck has 107,000 miles on the clock and i'm a little worried about reliability issues and other mechanical problems that could be wrong with it. What are some the known issues or things that i should be looking out for as i test drive the truck and look it over. Just to answer some of the questions before they are asked....i'm not looking to pull 20,000+lbs (hopefully 7,000 to 10,000 including the trailer, i would love to buy a diesel but i can't afford it, i know gas mileage is going to suck but that's why i drive 4cyl car through the week, this is the lowest mileage truck i could find in my price range.

Thanks for the help

Never had a problem with the engine......transmissions were a different story though! I think the engine was the best pulling "gas" engine I have ever owned. I just kept blowing trannies apart.

My old shop, I had 3 of them in the spark plug blowing out of the head.
I read some where that this was somewhat common, but its nothing you can plan for.

Was this an automatic or manual tranny?

Thanks for the replies.

I have that exact same year truck. Quadcab 4x4 Automatic.

I found a lot of info here:

I bought mine in January with 88K miles. Now have 92K. I can't comment too much about reliability, but I love this truck. I did have a problem towing last month. I had about 7000lbs on and it would "miss" while pulling under load. It was very bad in OD. I downshifted to D and it mostly went away. Not quite, though. It ran fine empty, but would miss while towing.

I replaced the plugs & wires (it had the originals) and the problem was corrected. Even running poorly, this truck would run circles around my '99 GMC 7.4 4x4.

I'm going to look at the truck this morning so i'll report back my findings on condition and what not. the biggest sticking point for me is that my 2000 dodge 1500 only has 51,000 miles on it and i would be trading for one with 107,000 miles, but the trucks you find with my price range are a little higher mileage. Anyway thanks for the the info.

You'll almost always get the best deal when you're not looking hard or motivated to find something in a short period of time. Keep your eye out and go about driving your truck. A better deal (lower mileage and/or lower price) will come around.

I'm pretty confident that i won't be trading any time soon. i've just about got my truck paid for (six mor payments) and it would be nice to not have a payment for awhile. i think i've just used up my cheap low mileage truck deal with the one i currently have. but that won't stop me from browsing:D it must be hereditary (spelling?) because my granddad trading cheap cars and trucks around two or three times a year for most of his life.
