It's a Suburban, not a K5, but the pics may still help. :)

Is there any way you can get better shots of where it goes thru the dash?

:D I like that! You did a nice job, thats on my to do list in the next couple of months to the new 74 I got. What size tubing is that? I like the way you tied it into the frame.

Thanks, guys! I'd like to take the credit for the nice work, but a guy named Bob Neibert in Thousand Oaks did the cage for me. I'm real pleased with his work; nice guy, too. My welding skills aren't good enough for me to trust for something as important as a full cage.:emb4:

Muddin: I will snap a couple extra photos of the cage where it goes through the dash and post them in a couple minutes. They should be available to view by 1:00pm Pacific Time.

You worried the sky is gonna fall on you? That seems a little much for pure protection unless your gonna running high speeds. It is a really nice cage though.

Sweet cage in the 'Burb. I've been contemplating how to do mine, and I'm thinking about going through the dash as well. Do you plan to reinstall the factory dashpad (and if so, what year is the truck)? Also, will the factory gauge cluster still work?

Hey, Pete --

Yep, I'll be reinstalling the factory dashpad, and will just notch it to wrap around the cage tubes. The truck is a '73. The original dashpad is pretty crusty, so after I notch it to fit, I'll send it to a company out here in Canoga Park (sorry, can't recall the name right now) that reconditions them. They said that they can conform the padding to any shape I cut.

As for the factory gauge cluster, I've already test fit it and it fits with no problem at all.

Take care,
Robb

Cool, I've heard of some guys saying their factory clusters won't fit with their through-the-dash cages, however I want to keep mine. Now I just have to find a place for the driver's side speaker (as I'm down to just the 2 dash speakers at this point-lost the door ones when I cut off the bottoms of the doors :D). Maybe just move them both to the center hole. Note exactly a huge issue.

Forgot to mention, Pete, that I've sacrificed my stock e-brake mechanism by running the downtubes through the dash. I plan to use a hand brake from a P-Series (forward cab) attached to the cage tube that runs alongside the driver's seat. Always liked the hand brakes better anyway.:D

Mine hasn't been hooked up since I did the rear disk (although I have the right calipers). It doesn't have the full travel anyway, due to my rocker panel mods. If I ever get around to fixing it, I was thinking of getting one like in a Toyota. The over-center lever type like in the medium dutys isn't a bad idea, though. The one in the Top Kick I used to drive worked pretty well.

Maybe i just missed it but did you ever say what diameter the tubing was on the subs cage. I like the fact that its tied in to the frame and not just bolted or welded to the body.

Hey 502sub. I live in TO right now and have been working on planning a cage for the bed of my 52 Willys pickup. I know someone who has a bender I can borrow, but if I can get a good cage built for a reasonable price I might be more willing to do that. How do I get in touch with the guy who built your cage? It looks like really good work.

on the 'tied to the frame' issue,
I dont think it needs to be tied to the frame to protect the occupants but if you want the frame reinforcement as well it is a must.
cage designs for these trucks is difficult when it comes to attachment to the frame theories.

the frame bushings vs cage bushings could cause body to crack.

Check these out Dep. This is an S&W Racecars cage kit. I wish now I would have ran it through the dash. I welded this myself using a 110V Miller Mig.

The tubing is 1 3/4" X .120" wall.

I plan to do the family cage soon.
