: HEEEELP! How do i remove the knuckle on my 79 F250 HP Dana 44 Axle?

i'm so new at the whole front axle thing and this is really getting to me...

I removed the allen screws around the hub... i think they were 1/8" allen screws, not that it matters

once that was removed, i removed the phillips screw that was retaining in some part... which popped out, along with a spring, once i removed the screw. this is ok since i'm replacing all this anyway....

now i'm stuck... i popped off a c-clip that was around the edge of the outer axle shaft... but now i'm lost as to how i remove the brake rotor assembly...

once i get the brake rotor and bearings out it seems as though i will have some bolts to remove, and then be able to access the crown nut on the top side of the bottom ball joint which holds in the knuckle.

i wish i had a camera right now....

either way, can anyone point me towards a tutorial? or some sort of step-by-step guide on how to get this done? i have to shop my knuckle to PartsMike so it can be milled, drilled, and tapped for my steering and i'm really limited on time.

thanks in advance

-Erik

Are you using a locknut spanner?

what is a locknut spanner?

i have a 4 point socket i got from advance auto that will fit it... or at least it should. i'm about to go try my luck now.

this is where i left off... clueless...

after you get the inner hub out you must remove 2 spanner nuts and there is a lock ring in between them. Then the rotor and bearings will come off, Next take the spindle mounting bolts loose. Then use a brass hammer to remove the spindle, Then pull out the axle. Next remove the nuts on the top and bottom ball joint and tap the knuckle down and remove it, Hope that helps you

after a quick trip to advance auto, since i lost my retainer clip pliars, i got everything apart... except i don't have the right size socket for the lower ball joint on the knuckle.... anyone know what size this is?

thanks for the help. the locknut spanner i have... i just didn't know it's technical name.

when my new warn premium hub kit comes in, will it come with all new hardware... new retainer clip, 2 spanner nuts, and lock ring?

also, the big heavy odd shaped piece that the caliper actually bolts to... the previous owner apparently stripped the bolt that holds in the clip thingy which holds in the caliper. he welded it in place as a fix. i cut the weld off and removed the caliper, but i need to either drill and tap a new hole in order to resecure that retainer clip for the caliper, or i need to purchase a new bracket.... any idea where i could get a new bracket if i chose that route?

tack weld it back in!!! if the "clip thingy" is worn u either need try to get an aftermarket oversized thingy from the auto parts or keep replacing them or tack weld it like i did. that`s if u do anything more than daily driving

i guess i can just tack it back in place but i was planning on grinding all the tack weld off and drilling a whole and tapping it so i can put a new bolt in it to hold the slide in place..... that is, if i can't find another caliper bracket... the clip/slide is in perfect shape though... not worn, per say. it looks just as good as the one from the other side.

thanks for the heads up though... i know something needs to be done, just not sure wha ti want to do. in the 2.5 years i've driven my yj i have not had to replace my front pads... put new ones on when i bought it and they still have half life left in them.... so if i tack it, it wouldn't really be THAT big of an issue... at least not for the next 3-4 years i'm guessing...
