Someone just GAVE me an 87 F-350 so I could use it as my tow vehicle. The only probelm is it dosen't go backwards! Do Ihave to swap a new trany in? I hope it might be a common thing for Fords and mabey not as complicated to fix as installing a new transmission.
It has an auto trany.
Also, the shifter is screwed up. Everyting is "shifted" over one spot for example: P is reverse R is neutral N is drive ect. Hopefully this might have something to do with the prob.
If I do need to get another trany, will a F150 or 250 work?
If the Ford board is anything like the Yota board I am gonna get flamed for not searching but I have had such a bad day I don't have the paitence to do it. Cut me some slack please.
Thanx in advance for any help.
ok, since we can't let the Yota folks get away with everything, :flipoff2:
Back to you're problem, Is it an Overdrive Automatic? What Engine? 4x4 or 4x2? Need more info.
I know we have a few good trannie guys that should be able to help you.

I am not sure on the engine, but I know it is not a diesel. I went out and looked on the tag on the valvecover but it was too faded to read.
It has D with a line under it so I don't think it is an overdrive.
It is a 4x2.
I am gonna try to get to the dealership and give them the # off of the title and I think they can tell me what kinda engine is in it.

If it's a D with a line under it, I assume it's an AOD, and if it's an AOD, I assume it's a 302 in front of it. It's an '87 and the only overdrive available in that year was the AOD and the only engine that the AOD was available with is the 302. Of course, knowing Ford I'm probably wrong but that's my best educated guess.
To fix the shifter, go under the truck and loosen the shift rod from the lever that bolts onto the framerail- it's a 9/16" nut. Then go in your cab and shift the lever to the D with the line under it and hang a weight off the lever to keep it against its stop. Go back down under the truck and manually shift the lever on the tranny to the OD position, 4th from the front I think (P, R, N, OD) then tighten down the nut on the shift rod. That should get everything lined up again.
