I'm nervous to ask this here, but you guys know this stuff, so here goes:
Buddy of mine, got a '41 Chevy pickup. He building a hyped up strait 6, and needs a decent rear end, for cheap. i have no idea what WMS stands for, but his axle measures 60.5" from outside of drum to outside of drum. he wants an axle same width, 6 lug chevy pattern, and able to handle +/- 400 HP. any axles you guys know of fit this bill, or is he gonna be stuck narrowing a 12 bolt. thanks, and you guys rule.:usa:

ford 9" all the way- tell him to call moser or currie and they will make him a complete rear end with custom semifloat axle shafts that are the 6 bolt pattern.

14 bolt, dime a dozen. Not sure of the width they come in, but I am pretty sure he would have to narrow it no matter what to get it that width. Much better than wasting time on a 12 bolt. I would take my 8" over a 12 :flipoff2:
Why not a toyota Tacoma rear axle?
they are an 8.4" ring gear and are already right around 60" wide
the only other rear axle that is close would be a D44 from a late model Wagoneer.. 61" wide and 6 om 5.5

Get a 14 bolt, Dana 60, or Dana 70 from a cab and chasi truck. Axles measure about 63-62" wide. Not to many other options for a cheap axle in that width that will handle 400hp. Don't bother with a Toy axle or a Dana44. Also, it wouldn't be a bad idea to go and inch or two wider than the stock axle as an old truck like that had skinny axles relative to the size of the vehicle.
So my vote is for a narrow 14 bolt.

look for a (hard to find but trick) a small 14...
its out of a chevy 454SS rear... its 14 bolt with a small and slightly shaved diff...
very cool - but would neeed modified...
IF I were you I would plan on modifying a rear unless you can live with 1 - 2 inches wider you'r gonna need to
BUT I got some lines on Dana 35's for real cheap!

something just came to mind, I remember reading about dually axles being narrower than normal axles? so maybe a dually 14 bolt or dana 60? anyone? probably still need to convert to 6 on 5.5 though.

Yes, as long as you swap to single wheel hubs...

Dana60 or 9" w/custom axle shafts.....
Is this going to be a slammed street truck or a lifted beast?
Either way. you gotta watch out for the axles w/big pumpkins like the D60 and 14Bolt for ground clearance issues and what not...

this is for a street rig, tweaked 292, he's probably gonna run 235/75s for tires. I think he's leaning towards the waggy D44, seems to be the cheapest option. if he blows it, maybe he can upgrade eventually. thanks for the help guys.
