: SBC Dilema
Big DW 09-18-2006, 09:34 PM So I have a 86 and older SBC...I just took out of the cruiser a 91 305 that has all of the serpentine bracketry for the accessories...The new motor (86 and older) does not have the 2 bolt holes that I need on the passenger side for the aluminum bracket (I have my york on-board air on this side)...has anyone made this older style engine work with the newer brackets? Did you make a custom braket and weld a stud to the bracket? Any help would be great as I really don't want to try and sell this motor and find one that will work...It's already in the cruiser and about 6 hours away from running...
LCOwner 09-18-2006, 09:45 PM Drill and tap it. Meassure the depth, hang the brackets and drill it. Or mark it and take the heads to a machine shop.

Is it that simple? Is there enough material there to do this without getting into a water jacket or something? That would be the easiest...I really don't want to take the head off....

peesalot 09-18-2006, 10:11 PM Hey Big DW , The same guy , Joe , that has the fenders sitting at his shop had a york on that side on his ole chevy motor. V belt style , if you are running V belts I could get his old york mount as he runs a newer dodge sb now. Could send it with fenders.

I really appreciate the offer, I'm gonna try to make it work with my existing bracket as it would be alot of work to go to a v-belt solution...georg and I are gonna try to figure something out on Wednesday...keep the ideas coming...thanks
Toploader 09-18-2006, 11:04 PM Just take your time and use cutting oil. Cast iron likes to eat taps. Get a bottoming tap for your second run.

NORCALFJ40 09-18-2006, 11:56 PM Look up gm performance serp. kit. They say right in the add, that the holes that the pre 86 dont have, doesnt make a difference, and that it is ok to run the serp without them. but they do include a brace that connects from the ac mount (where your york is now mounted) down to the intake manifold as some extra support. Hope this helps , Kodi

have you ever takin manifolds off of a 440 dodge. they leak water. thats what thread sealant is for. or even locktite.
orangefj45 09-19-2006, 07:05 AM yup. drill and tap that fawker dave. i have all the tools to do it but like mark pointed out we should do a second pass with a bottom tap. i do not have one of those so you might want to find one locally. if you don't want to keep the tap, i'll pay for it wand will keep it. i'm a tool whore. (awn crap, better put on my flame suit!)

That is exactly what I did. I just ignored the missing holes and it's fine. No problems what so ever.
peesalot 09-19-2006, 09:42 AM Orange , are your spooning days over ?
Drill and tap already.
Whats a bottoming tap ? I assume it is one that cuts the threads all the way to the nose as opposed to a standard that has the first 1/4 " or so of starter teeth instead of full depth grooves.
NORCALFJ40 09-20-2006, 01:21 AM This is the brace GM recomends when using the kit on the old style heads.

Thanks for all the ideas...that brace will help alot...time to hit the bone yard...
orangefj45 09-20-2006, 07:00 AM looks like "problem solved" to me. good info kodi!
dave, do yourself a favor and don't bother wasting your time at the junk yard. order a new one from the dealer. i bet it'll be less than $30 for the brace and hardware. gm is pretty reasonable about that type of stuff.
Toploader 09-20-2006, 04:34 PM You definilty should run the brace IMO. Mine busted the housing on the freeway and it wasnt a nice sound when shit went flying under the hood.
You can make a bottoming tap out of a spare tap by just grinding the point of a regular one.
orangefj45 09-20-2006, 10:05 PM bawahahaha, i remember when the aluminum brackett in your 55 let go. serpentine spaghetti!
