: Bye Bye flapper
jdjanda 04-29-2002, 10:02 AM This weekend half the flapper valve parted with the rest of the exhaust. Nothing like running down the freeway with an open header :D Who has successfully eliminated the flapper without switching to headers. I've talked to a few shops and most won't touch it. Do the manifolds use the same design on both sides? Thus I could tell the shop to match the design on the drivers side.
Thoughts guys? And yes I'm taking it to a shop, I hate exhaust work and I'm tired of the dam leaks.
Joe
ol John Henry 04-29-2002, 10:08 AM I haven’t run a heat riser in years;) :D
Rubicrawler 04-29-2002, 10:13 AM A couple of local shops I've had good luck with:
Meinekie Muffler- talk to Darrell- he's a wheeler and does a great job. He did a 2.5" flowmaster single on my EB that I'm very happy with :D Great tone without the noise!
Mell and Son's- I think the owner's name is Don. Great workmanship! He did 2 CJ's for me :)
Both on Monument in Concord :)

I unbolted the exhaust from the passenger side.
Beat out the flapper.
Shoved the exhaust back up, coated an old exhaust donut with some grease to hold it in place.. stuck it in place, put the bolts in, and I was done.
BFD.
I need to do it to the rear-dump in my Travelette soon.. the little exhaust leak is pretty annoying when listening to make sure the engine is happy..

I'd just as much prefer to eliminate once and for all. But thanks for the link, I'll give them a call when I'm ready to restore my Scout to concourse condition.
The exhaust leaks bug the sheet out me, I've been through the ringer with the exhaust, hence the reason I want to take it out for the work.
RustoleumWhite 04-29-2002, 01:02 PM should be the same on both sides...
like tom said: unbolt, remove, new donut, boom. The pipe below the flaper *should* have the same flare as the other side....
hmm, need to do the same think to the t-lette.... annough little buggers...
scoutver5.7 04-29-2002, 01:28 PM Joe, for cryin' out loud, put headers on the damn thang!

well, in that case (sucks to live in cali), one of two choices.... get new one (Old Scout's recomendation), or t\remove existing, tourch/cut out insides, replace...
now it "looks like its there".... but its not :D
the only thing it does is help it warm up faster.... don't see how the smog Nazi's can argue that... but they probably would..

I'm having the shop remove it. I doubt I'll find one smart enough too know that there is suppose to be one. I've got another year before the next smog, plenty of time for the pipe to rust up and hide the evidence.

scoutver5.7 04-29-2002, 06:28 PM Ooooops, Sorry 'bout that. I forgot ya'll got sniffer nazis.
Man, I couldn't live in Cali or in town.
Sometimes I wish I'd stayed up in Manderas state.
jdjanda 04-29-2002, 06:50 PM It's done, just got back. Cut the old one off welded a flanged section on. Nice and quiet. Best $75.00 I've spent in a long time.
