: U-Joint Upgrade?
Leo_S 04-29-2002, 01:52 PM You've all heard of it, right? Well, I read about it here:
http://www.jeepaholics.com/citizensband/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=354&FORUM_ID=9&CAT_ID=5&Topic_Title=Tech+%2D+30%2DMinute+U%2DJoint+Upgrade&Forum_Title=What%27s+New%3F
You wouldn't happen to know where I can get some of them little u-bolts, would you? Bought some axles from a dude (mrreddog) that already had this done to it, but he didn't have the part number for hte bolt. (Or size)
TIA, :flipoff2:
TexasBlake 04-29-2002, 01:56 PM Not sure if this is what you mean. But here's the link to the off-road.com write up and it has a bunch of part numbers and such. hope this helps:

Archie_G 04-29-2002, 04:06 PM The easest way to do this upgrade is to go to a junkyard, find a 70's CJ axle with the u-bolts (not U-joints as your topic states) and pull the yoke. Replace your straps with the U-bolts.

IB (or anyone who knows),
That's what I'm looking for! :D
You wouldn't happen to know where I can order this part from that article?
U-bolt part #2-94-58X
TIA,
Leo
sjb83cj 04-30-2002, 06:47 AM You can find it here:eek:

oldmanscj7 04-30-2002, 01:29 PM Any good auto parts store will have those U-bolts. Just ask for a U-joint U-bolt kit for a 74 cj5. From NAPA I think the kit cost about $4.
Jaffer 04-30-2002, 07:46 PM Drilling and then putting in swaged out wider U bolts may help you newbies a little ... so they don't come unscrewed so easily.
BUT, it's no huge improvment.
Get the real deal with the proper yokes designed for U bolt straps ... these hug the SIDES as well as the tops of the U joint caps.
Where are the forces??? DUH!!!
It's at the SIDES of the caps mostly.
A swaged out U bolt doesn't even touch the cap's sides.
A proper U bolt style yoke holds the caps 180* all around the inside of the yoke with the U bolt strap holding firm on the other 180*... a snug 360* all the way around.
If you can't figger this out ... then do what you will ...
:D
BootsntheJeep 04-30-2002, 07:53 PM I agree with Jaffer. The yokes actually designed for u-bolts are a lot beefier and are much better built as opposed to a regular yoke that you drill out. I just like to know that instead of REMOVING material, there's actually more DESIGNED to be there.
On my CJ, with a dana 30 front end and dana 300 t-case, the yokes are all the same. Only the sheilds that cover the seals are different. dana 30, dana 44, and dana 300 yokes arer all interchangable, so if you can find one with the u-bolts, get em and then swap out the seal covers.
I got mine off of EBay, somebody was selling a bunch of dana 44 u-bolt yokes, they looked brand new. $10 a piece, I bought three. Did both yokes on the t-case and the front yoke. The write-ups all say that you can drill out the AMC 20 and fit a u-bolt, but I couldn't see how without using a bridgeport or removing way to much material to keep it safe.

Not to be a smug wittle newbie (what-so-ever) but I didn't ask that. You see, that's what I love about PBB now-it-alls; even if one doesn't ask a particular question, you'd better bet your last buck you're gunna get an opinion from some(biased)body about it, anyway. :flipoff2:
Just a friendly FYI... I bought a D30/D35 combo from a new friend, on this board. The "ONLY" reasons I bought them is the lower gearing (4.11's vs. my current 3.07's) and the pricing. This mod has already been done to it, but I'm missing one of the U-bolts. I figured I'd better stock up since I fully intend on busting the D35 up, soon. The D30 (I think) is still set up for the strap thingies.

Leo_S 05-03-2002, 07:49 AM Okay fine! I'll do get the upgraded yoke. Can someone please point me in the right direction as to where I can get one that is compatible with a D35c?
TIA!
bluebellyday 05-03-2002, 03:02 PM If it will make you go away :flipoff2:
