I have a stock 1985 CJ7 with a very tired AMC 2.5 in it. Can anyone tell me if a fuel injected 4.0 will bolt up to my 4 speed tranny? I dont have time to find a 258 and rebuild it right now, the 4.0 s seem to be quite easy to find with low mileage. Thanks!!

I believe the 2.5 you have is the Pontiac Iron Duke.. If that is the case a small block Chevy or 4.3 V6 will bolt in using the stock bellhousing..

Only one problem, the 4 sp. is probably a T4 if its an 85, good luck making it live more than a minute behind small block power. Maybe 5 minutes behind a 4.3.

I think you are right on about the transmission even behind the 4 cyclinder it feels a little light. When I had some work done on the motor I believe they called it an AMC known as the hurricane? I could be wrong but I dont think chevy will bolt up. I dont want to put alot of cash into it right now or I would change the motor and tranny, my wife would like her house finished first so I thought if a 4.0 with fuel injection would bolt in, I can pick one up fairly reasonable. Thanks any help is appreciated

I dont think its a hurricane unless it was changed out, which is unlikely--- 85's came with the iron duke...
but, I've heard some Iron duke bellhousings came with both amc and chevy bolt patterns, but I'm not sure about this.... you can search or check out offroad.com 's jeep pages and check into it. While a 4.0 is a great swap, remember that you'll have to deal with all the electronics, as well as fuel lines, and an intank pump or a pump off of the motor like some of the GC's run (or so I've been told) I would say that It's well worth it though, and if not put in a 258 or 304--- these will be fine with your t4 with moderate use
