: 4wd low on eb
I have a 1970 bronco with three spd and stock transfer case(what ever it is):(
I was wondering what I could do to get it to crawl a little bit slower. I don't want to change the tranny and t-case. :(
It has a 9" rear and a 30 front, could I change the gears, if so what could i put?
Thanks a lot:D

First- your stock TC is a Dana 20
Second- I know you said you didn't want to replace the tranny but, IMO, the easiest way to lower your crawl ratio is to replace the stock 3 spd with a NP435 4 spd. It has a first gear ratio of 6.69 to 1 which would reduce your crawl ratio by about 100% over stock.
Rubicrawler is correct, The SINGLE best thing to do is swap in a NP-435. The Dana 20 has the best low range short of getting a newer chain-drive t-case, it is 2.46:1.
Yes, you could go thru the trouble of swapping gears in the axles but unless you have larger tires to offset the ratio change driving on the freeway is going to be very slow. And you'd still be wanting that lower 1st gear for crawling.
Good luck.
Eric
so will the np435 fit with my stock dana 20? do I have to get an adapter? where would be the cheapest place to get the tranny?
Thanks a lot:D
Give WildHorses4x4, Advance Adaptors, James Duff, etc.... a call. Yes you do need an adaptor for the conversion and if there is no body lift a good chunk of the floor needs to be cut. The T-case will stay in the stock location so drive shafts don't have to be messed with for this conversion. Talk to those people they will have all the info.
Eric
cool, I will give them a call and see whats up
thanks

Another satisfied customer here in the harsh realm of P.O.R. :flipoff2:
IronBenderII 04-29-2002, 09:28 PM If you know where to get a stock 6cyl adapter that goes from the 3 speed to the dana 20, go with Chuck @ BC Broncos. He has an adapter. Otherwise, there are companies that for like $200 or so will convert your existing housing to fit.
Again, the NP435 is the best way to get a good crawl ratio. It's bolt on and won't affect highway speeds.

Rubicrawler 04-29-2002, 10:49 PM Lure- you're not too far from me (about 1.5-2 hours). You're welcome to come down sometime and give mine a test drive. You'll be convinced as soon as you drop it into First and let out the clutch.
I think that I am going to go with that rather than a gear swap. Besides, I heard that the stock 3 spd isn't any good. do any of you happen to know if you can find an np435 at a wrecking yard like a pick and poll?:D
don't know if that would be possible but its worth asking:)
thanks

You might be able to. Look for mid 70's to mid 80's trucks. Most 4 spds will be BW T-18's or NP-435's. Both are strong units but the NP-435 has a lower first gear (6.69 for the 435 and 6.32 for the T-18) The easiest way to tell them apart is by looking at the top cover. The NP-435 has an aluminum cover and the T-18 is cast iron.
welndmn 04-30-2002, 11:32 AM Yup, get it at the junk yard, Wild horses has a good disc of what you want to look for like Mark said.
Most just yard 435 cost about 100-150, I have had mine for 2-3 years i think, i never rebuilt it just throw it in your truck, those trannys are really strong
then get the adaptor 200-350 and your set, thats all you need!
right on, thats what im going to do. Do you know if a np435 out of a dodge will fit on a ford?
Thanks:D
a buddy of mine at work has an np435 he told me that he would sell to me but it is off of a dodge 440. would that make any differance?
Thanks:D
StoopidMonkey 05-01-2002, 10:38 AM Just find one out of an late 60s 2wd Ford pickup, theres 3 sitting in one of my local wrecking yards here, so there not to hard to find. I have the 435 in my EB now and it kicks ass.
Rockit 05-03-2002, 11:48 AM Lure,

ROCKRICER 05-03-2002, 11:51 AM You are looking for a 435 with a 28 spline output- if you want to adapt it to the D20.
The best bet for this is the get a 2wd version.
I am using a t18/np205 combo out of a 79 F150 in my 68 EB. I had to make a crossmember (easy), and buy new yokes for the 205 to match my driveshafts (i know they are smaller but i'm poor)
I did this whole conversion for like $450, it leks b/c I installed is as is- will have to pull it later and rebuild/reseal it.
I wheels like 500% better.

Ya have to be very careful sending a owner of a Virgin EB to those more hardcore sights, many kittens may die!!
One peek of the likes of Lee's Bronco and "stock" will be a thing of the past.
So will the phrase..."Well I have some extra money"

Thank you all for the help!!:D
