Yea, I'm not good with motors, but I learn quick, so take it easy on me to start please. I'll warn you, these will be STUPID questions .. so if you are looking to bash on someone, I guess I'm it tonight.

I have a 350 in a project rig I'm working on. The guy that had the motor before me already did a few things to it (disconnecting smog crap, holley carb, etc). I'm looking at the motor and I want to clear up a few things with some pros that know a hell of a lot more than I do about it.

Fuel Pump
On the bottom left of the motor is a small mushroom looking thing with 3(?) rubber tubes coming out of it. It has two bolts to the motor. From what I can figure its a mechanical fuel pump right? I have an eletric FP i'm using on it .. so do they make a plate that covers that up so I can pull it off safely? It's actually taking up some valuable room I need under the hood.

Carburator
I have a Holley 650 carb on it. The throttle cable wasy easy enough to get hooked up, but I'm left with a few things I'm not sure how to do.
I have a cable coming from the TH350 tranny that is (from what I'm told) suppose to be hooked on to the bottom loop of the same bracket setup that the accelerator cable hooks up to. That way, when you press the pedal, it pulls the cable to the tranny. First ... is that true? (bottom loop shown in the picture below), Second .. for my knowledge sake, what the hell does the cable do for the tranny?

On the other side of the carb is a bracket that rotates the valve at the top of the carb to let it breath. It is currently not connected to anything .. and just basically propped wide open. Where should this connect to?

Belt Setup
If you haven't checked the sig yet, you probably shouldn't because you'll probably consider it an insult ... but yes, I've put this beast in a Samurai. The good part is that this kind of power in a rig is exactly what I wanted, the bad is that the radiator is in my backseat. One of the things I'm looking at is lengthening the front end a bit to put it back out in front. If I do that, I want to see if there is something I can do to shorten the front of the motor a bit ... so I figured I would ask if any of you have seen a bracket/pulley combo for the front of the motor that cuts down on the depth that the entire serpentine setup (and alternator bracketry) takes up? It's easily 10"+ in length, and I would think you could slim it down to 4" with a better design .. that alone would let me put a radiator back in front.

Ratchet Shifters
Anyone know if Shucks/AutoZone/Napa, etc sell generic replacement handles, rubber boots, etc for the ratchet shifters (B&M in my case) or do I have to order them online or from the manufacturer directly?

fuel pump,
yes that is the fuel pump.
yes ou can get a block off plate from kragen, its like $10.
BUT, there is a large rod that needs to be removed from behind the larger plate, that pushes on the pump via the cam.

tranny,
that is called a tv cable and it is used for down shifting the tranny when you stab the gas.

carb,
that is part of the choke setup, it could be connected to a couple of things.
1 you can hook it up vai a manual choke cable
2 it can have an electric choke which would have a large canister on that side of the carb with 2 elec. connectors
3 it can have a thermo choke, a small sheet metal box with a short linkage rod coming out of the top. it will sit on a little flat spot on the intake.

belts,
you have what is known as a long water pump setup. the short pump setup will only save you about 2". you wiil need all old style brackets and to mve the alt to the other side of the motor, as for the p/s pump, it will move doan toe the very bottom of the motorand if you cant clear the fuel pump i doubt you will clear the p/s pump.

if you skip to some hard core racing parts you will gain another 1-2" but i dont thing it will get the 4" like you want. and this is all assuming you are going to use a pusher elec fan oon the front of the rad.

shifters,
you can get shifters from kragen but you have to ask for them, they seem to walk off the shelfs. summit and jegs will be a better price.

Thanks so much for the answers. That helps a lot. I'll keep the radiator in the back, I'll see about doing an electronic choke, get the tranny cable hooked up, etc. Once again, THANKS!

the tv cable also tells the trans when to shift.if i remember right making that cable tighter will move the shift point up. but dont quote me

 never heard that. if it's true that'd be dope though.

I've always heard of it called a kick-down cable. as in you kick the throttle you down shift. aha.

The TV/kickdown cabler is a very important part of the trans. Make sure you have it set up correctly. I smoked 3rd and 4th out of my 700r because mine was to loose. You can adjust the shift points with it but that isn't the recomended way. It sets the internal fluid pressures that hold thetrans in each gear.

a turbo 350 trans cable is a "kick down" cable. if you don't hook it up it won't hurt anything. it just won't shift down for you when you floor the skiny pedal.
