Okay...Just about to order my double ended ram (from Station...Great guy btw) and I'm wondering what sized heim to tap the ram ends to...At first I was thinking a 3/4 male...That would leave 3/8ths of ram shaft around the heim....The heim would then go to a pair of Avalanche hy-steer arms on top of my cheby 60 knuckles...Then I got to lookin' at the shear strength (yet again) of the 3/4 compared to the 5/8ths...27K v.s. 47K lbs static...I'm thinkin' 5/8th's...That way the bolt would shear before the arm stuts would shear and/or (potentially) break the knuckle...Sorta' a easily replaceable fuse in the system...I'm thinkin' the 5/8ths are gonna' be fine considering the ram is puttin' out what? 5000lbs of force?
Whata' yal'l think?

Somebody posted a chart on Grade 8 bolt strengths a lil while ago. A 5/8" gr8 bolt has a 27k pound shear rating. Your ram won't be putting out near that much power, i think. Well, a 2" bore has a piston surface area of (2*3.14=6.28) 6.28 square inches. Avg. sag. pump puts out 1000-1200 psi, if modded up to 1500 or more. So 1500*6.28=9420 lbs of force. I am just assuming that you have a 2" bore ram, and you will mod your pump for more pressure.
In any case, a 5/8" bolt will be fine, yeah...

Thanks man  ...I thought so too...Again, when looking at all the 1" hardware on full hydro systems it got me second guessing again...
This list fin' rocks!

What's the OD of the shaft? The rams Sean sources are 1.5"...With 3/4 that leaves .375 around the shank of the heim.
