Be gentle with me people, I've never started a thread here before!
I have a NP208F in my 85 Bronchole. I rebuilt it last year Mainly due to the nylon/plastic ring that the hi/lo shift fork actuates failing. It seems that the shift fork wears this part out over time. I seem to remember hearing that some of the earlier versions were made from bronze or brass. Were these [people taking some substances?
I just had this failure again last weekend at Pismo and had to do a field fix to get it to stay in hi range for the 200 mile drive home.
Any CONSTRUCTIVE comments will be greatly appreciated!
Any smarta$$ comments will be reviewed for their entertainment value!
And yes I am aware that the $2000.00+ Atlas will bolt right up to my adapter, I would just like to be able to eat next month, and the month after that.

Could it be my shifting habbits?
I usually shift while I am moving slowly in neutral.
Or maybe the forks were not correctly aligned?
Someone out there must have a load of experience with these, I've searched for "208" and looked at all the relevent threads. They mention that this is the wear point but not how to minimize the wear ar any possible fixes for it.
i have and 86 f250 with a 208 and 160000+ miles and i have never had a prob with the t case.

Do you wheel it often?
If so do you always make sure to stop moving when you shift it?
I'm thinking that maybe that is the reason this one wore out so fast.

Dan....I've been thinking about this and have come up with two possible suggestions.
high cost definite fix - put in a 205 and a solid axle :flipoff2:
low cost -- try posting this in general4x4 and see if anyone there knows...
oh and one more :flipoff2: for making me actually go into the ford section for the first time since I registered to post this :flipoff2:

Oh great, now i got to figure out how to move/copy this to the general 4x4 area!
my 208 has been wheeled often, it used to go on beaches on a reg weekend basis and now sees it alot in the winter and occasional offroad trips to the local areas, but nothing hardcore it is my daily/ tow rig. i shift into 4hi at higher speeds like 30 and have no probs. i did swap to a solid front axle and ditched the ttb setup but that shouldnt have anything to do with it.

you can't you're not a mod...
just go to your original post, click on edit, then copy everything, back out using the back button on your browser and go to gen4x4 and post and paste it in the new window...
and stop making me post in this damn forum :flipoff2:

I finally got hooked up with a local shop that specializes in t-cases. The guy that I talked to is setting me up with the annular, fork, and fork pads from another type of NP208. This should reduce the potential of this same problem from happening as easily. The guy did say though that this type of failure is not normal, and is almost always from running the case low on fluid.
Tthe case did have a little more than 3 quarts in it when I drained it, and it normally holds just over 1 gallon so I don't think that would be the culpret.
The only possibility that I can think of is when I rebuilt the case last year, the reeplacement fork I used had some type of problem with it that caused this unusual wear.
O-WELL hopefully it will be happy trials soon!
