After seeing the Yota's on the ramp this weekend I really wanna set up some kind of elliptical suspension on the back of my XJ. Does anybody have any information I could use? Thanks!

Welcome Newbie, do you have any experience with this board? I think this is a rather loaded question for the battle against newbie bashing. I will now refer you to two of our lovely features here at Club 4wheeler. The first is the Jeep talk mission statement if you cant find it do the second thing I will inform you of. It is the SEARCH feature just at the top of the page everywhere at Club 4Wheeler. Now go to the Newbie check in post and learn how to post and reply. To answer your question there are many posts reguarding different types of suspension on the SEARCH feature. I dont see why someone with fabbing skills couldnt build some kind of a elliptical suspension, just decide which type is best for you. Good luck and remember its all in good fun.:flipoff2: :D

By the way nice xj. Is yours the white one? I am surprised some of the guys that run with you dont know of any good systems to install. Do you want coils, coilovers, 1/4elliptical? there are many different systems and they all have different advantages.

i figure i'll try to beat everyone to the flaming on this one.
first off, all leaf sprung suspenion is elliptical, normal, like yours is 1/2 eliptic.
secondly, who cares if the yota can out ramp you?
third, do a search newbe!
anyways, i asume you want to build a 3/4 eliptical setup on your xj, i would suggest searching for info on here, the yota board, general board, and internet (google). and if anyone has any good info, please post it. oh ya, and i wanna do the same thing, cause i do care that i cant max out the ramp, yet, and it sounds like a fun project.

I did a search before I even registered and didn't find much info for XJs. I'm reading right now about the setup in general. I think Jeffh555 is right, I'm thinking of the 3/4 elliptical setup for my jeep.

A 3/4 elliptical is commonly called a "buggy spring", is that what u're thinking of? The only other thing that you could be thinking of is a 1/4 elliptical which requires major fabrication skills. And the previous poster is correct, all leave spring suspensions are some form of elliptical suspension. Elliptical merely refers to a circle. 1/2 elliptical, which is regular leaf springs, form half a circle. Buggy Springs form 3/4 of a circle and 1/4 elliptical suspensions only use 1/2 of a leaf spring and therefore form 1/4 of a circle.

Riiiiggght,

your looking at 3/4 eliptical. I have no idea how far you want to take you XJ mods, but a quick mod that shounds right down your alley would be to do a dual rear shackle similar to the teraflex revolvers they provide more drop but offer no added spring height. Ask around on jeeps unlimited im sure they can help you out.

Your XJ must have a cheap suspension because it should flex great,if it was done right. The revolver shackles will add some drop if you make sure nothing else limits your travel.Like shocks, brake lines,sway-bars etc. Besides who cares who can make it furthest up the ramp,it's the trail that counts. fawkin newbies:rolleyes:

My XJ gets a respectable 668 on a 25 degree ramp, shocks being my only limiting factor at this time.
As others had posted before me, go with the extended shackles, Revolver shackles, or double shackles, and get the longest shock that'll fit.
Anything can be done with the right plan, equipment, and knowledge.

This is the single worst piece of crap advice ever given for an XJ. Revolovers have this nasty habit of opening up at the wrong time when climbing and possible unloading your suspension in off-camber situations. XJ's flex just fine in the rear. Check your shock lengths, your brake cable lenghts. If you are running add-a-leafs these will cause your spring pack to be too stiff. Moving the tops off your shocks inward will allow more rear suspension travel also.

Good luck.

I have heard some horror stories on the Revolvers. On a friends XJ, heavily modified, these work excellent for him. While on others, they may not be so hot.
I'm keeping my eye on the moving the upper shock mounts inboard idea, as that I don't feel like mounting in-cargo-area shock hoops.
