I recently spun #3 rod bearing in my 85 J code 6.2 diesel K30. I have had some machine work done on my 6.2 (which was turbo charged via 6.5 set up) but have not gone really deep as Im needing a rod and a crank... a guy in my area offered me a lot of 3 diesels for 600 bucks.... (1) 6.2 w/ a busted rod. (1)6.5 naturally asperated, supposedly locked up... but complete from intake to oil pan... all brackets and pulleys. and lastly (1) TD 6.5 that was a running take out that is also complet from intake to oil pan. My main ? is, is it worth getting the 3 and parting out the other two and building the 6.5 to replace mmy 6.2? I liked my 6.2 TD but also like the fact that the 6.5 has that one peice rear seal where my 6.2 was always leaking no matter how many seals you put in. Also I have seen that the manual flywheel for the 6.5 carries the price tag of youf left nut, thus Im trying to research this before divin in too deep

If it were me, I'd be picking up the engines. Just looking at eBay prices you'll probably get that $600 back for the things you don't need and have enough to buy the other parts you do need. I don't have the experience with the 6.2 to compare to, but swapping in the 6.5 should be pretty direct.

www.thedieselpage.com is another good resource.

I would ask to pull the oil pans before forking over any cash. These engines are bad to have the mains cracked. The one that run is any way to check it out on a stand? What shape is the oil's in?

Don't bother with the $$$$ 6.5 flywheel. Use a normal 6.2L one instead.

The only real market value in a 6.2L nowadays is as a pinch-hitter swap for when a 6.5 goes :nuke:

Otherwise a 6.2L is just another outdated engine that about a dozen guys on the Internet seem to like to fawk around with and brag about mpg figures (Me included ;) ).

I would stick with the 6.2L stuff. Keep the spare 6.2s. Freshen up the 6.5TD and sell it. They are still a spendy engine to buy used.
