Ok, I'm not really new to jeeps, but I still don't know all of my transmission stuff. I just acquired a 83 CJ-8 through some horse trading. Mostly, it's bone stock, but the tranny seems goofy. It's a 4-speed, but reverse is all the way right, and up. My T-176 was right, and down, and so have most jeep 4-speeds I've driven. I think it's a T-18, but those weren't in 83's were they? If it is, it's probably the 4.02:1 version, 'cause it sure doesn't drive like the 6.whatever low. Anybody know the identifying marks for the Jeep T-18? Gotta decide if I wanna keep it before the 401 goes in:D Also, anybody know of a good halfcab hardtop in the northwest?

oops. guess I should have searched better. Found the jeeptech swap info, but it doesn't show me much for while the trans is still in the jeep, but I think it is a T-18 from that article. Unless, anybody knows of another trans with that shift pattern. Still searching for tha half cab though.

can't remember the shift pattern on it but it could be an sr4 if it came stock with a 4cyl.....that is the same pattern as my t18, but its a 6.32 first out of a j20. If it is a t18 it should be a cast iron case, that should be pretty easy to see.

I gotta second the SR-4 opinion. Had one in my 7, and it's second only to the Puegot trannies for suckiest possible tranny to put in a Jeep. They have a half-life of about .0325 seconds on the trail.

Sorry.

I dont think they made the SR4 in 83 did they, I thought that was 80 to 81 somthing, then they wnet with the T4, identical for the most part to the Sr4, Just as weeke even, my vote says it a t4 and you should remove it and get a T18.

the SR-4 was to the left of 1st gear

tells me it's a T4. This one has the smaller 3rd gear, the one I blew on my first Jeep trip with my '82 CJ8 some 14 years ago. It's about the size of an oreo cookie and just as strong! That started my upgrades and I never looked back. Here's a fun primmer for 4 speeds, many of which were used by Jeep,or can be retrofitted.
