: Heavy Half???

I've seen reference to this 'Heavy Half' before, but I'd like someone to elaborate a bit on it.

Anyway, I went to a junkyard today, and found what I thought was a D44 rearend in a 68 F-100 4x2. I figured this because of dangerranger33's post about RC D44 in the rear of mid 70s F100. Asked what they wanted for it, and it was $70.01 with tax. So of course I bought it. Went over and showed a friend, said it's a 60, I think no way, so I take the tape measure and compare it to his 44. Sure enough, it's a 60. Called a drive line friend, and he said it's true, those came with 9", D44, and the Heavy Half came with a D60. This 60 is a semi-floating, 5x5.5 bolt pattern with axle flange width of 56" compared to a 9" out of later trucks at 60". The cool thing, is I won't have to narrow it for my aplication. I will be able to get a WMS to WMS measurment of 61" from this. I don't know if it is 35 spline yet, and am really hoping someone can answer my questions. Any and all info on this would be greatly appreciated!

And before Alx or anyone else decides to flame me, yes this is my Virgin post and yes I did a search, so :flipoff2: you first! Chill and have a  , or flame on :rainbow: ! I can take it. :D :D :D

Thanks again,
Willis

Edit: cause my dumb ass can't spell.

Aren't all SF 35 spline? With the exception of the 16 spliners?

I thought it would have been 30 spline. I've never heard of a stock 35 spline D60 rear. But I could be wrong. Either way it's more than enough if he only wanted a 44 to start with

I just expected more shit for that being my virgin post. Just give me more time, I'll prove yet that I am infact a dumb ass. :D

I'll take some pics tomorrow if I can. To dark now. I'll post a pic of the Ford part # and some other interesting tidbits.

I did pull the carrier today, counted the spine count and it is infact 30 spline. I think I'm going to put a 35 spline full spool in it, some 4.88s, and custom Dutchman shafts. I'll fabricate my own disc brake kit and modify the spring pearches and shock mounts, and I'll be ready to rock and roll. I had to pull the carrier to verify spline, cause it did not come with shafts (forgot to mention in first post). But that's ok, cause I'll be using 35 spline shafts anyway. It does have 3.54 gears now, and some sort of limited slip.

Here's a little clip from the POR Bible under Jeep rear axles D60: Axle shaft diameter: 1969-1973 (medium truck) = 1 1/2"x35 spline semi-floating (5 on 5 1/2" lug pattern); 1969-1973 (heavy truck) and 1974-1983 = 1 5/16"x30 spline full-floating (8 on 6 1/2" lug pattern)

So some did come with 35 spline, but knowing Ford, I was not quite sure what to expect. I sure was hoping for 35 though. I bet that first axle listed would also be quite the find. Would be probably the perfect swap for some of you full sized boys.
