20R motor in a 1980 truck. Has spark, delivers fuel, plugs (at least plug #1) OK, static timed just in case. Turns and turns and turns and turns, no fire, even under ether. What other shinto mojo need I concern myself with on this?

Only "tested" #1 (got enough pressure to static time it).

You sure it needs compression on all 4?

yup. the basic things needed to run an engine is:

-fuel
-air
-ignition
-compresion.

and it sounds as if you already checked the fuel and ignition.

Compression not super-even, but present on all cylinders.

You checked to make sure all plugs are firing? Carbed or FI?

At least to the plug, yes. Plugs didn't look that bunged up (albeit carbon-fouled).

carbed, BTW

So do they all have spark?

Yes.

In short, I HAVE checked all the simple applies-to-any-motor things I could think of... I was hoping to discover if there were any quirks to Toyota that might prevent it from running if essentially everything else seems to be in working order.

is the spark bright and blue?? sometimes you can be fooled if it is kinda orange and blue...

How about a little backround. Did it just not start oneday? Or was this after something else was fixed? Was it acting different before?
