Ok I’m actually rebuilding.
I bought a 35’ “park trailer” frame that has two 3500lbs axles both with brakes (5x4.5 bolt pattern). The frame is made up of 2 levels of 6” channel. The first is where the suspension is hung is 22’ long and the second that is on top of the other is 35’ long. The two levels have some ? gauge metal Z’s that are also 6” tall that join the both side rails. They are 36-48" spaced out. Funky but it worked for what it was used for. The distance between the exterior channels is about 65” c/c.
The plan: Make a trailer that will haul two 2700-3000 lbs trucks. I know you’re already thinking “but you have 2 3500# axles!!” yes you’re right. The second small detail is the axles are not drop axles….I know tall trailer narrow trailer. That’s ok the trucks are Samurai’s!
I’ll ditch the upper 35' level and all the Z’s and add 2”x3”x1/4” angles at 24” centers. I’ll be using a wood deck (had steel decked trailer and HATED it!). The wood would be flush with the top of the channel. No dovetail as I go places that I think I’ll be draggin its bum. Now I’m assuming I’ll have to add a third axle since the trailer is not likely to weight only 1000 lbs’s.
For the width I can get away with 68” of deck, but it’ll be a close. At worse I could add a small “deck” (1/4” steel) of 6”-12” on each side of the channel. Hummm maybe make them on hinges that could double as small sides (easy boy:shaking: )….The fenders will be bent up to be “drive over proof” just incase.
front and rear will be 6" channel as well. The original tongue will be reused, it's 2 5/16" coupler.
Is any of this making sense so far? Will my adding a third axle be a hindrance?
Are the angles (2x3) big enough and distanced appropriately for the weight?
And any other question you might think up that I didn’t!
I don’t have an unlimited budget so go easy on me…..:D
And don't worry about the labour, I have a bunch of people that owe me BIG TIME!!
Sorry for the ranting…
Fire away boys.
