I keep getting the SES light I have tester and it reads something to the effect EGR pintle out of position blah...blah ...blah...
To you guys out there that have cleaned an EGR I have been told to use SPRAY carb cleaner and not to let it get in the electronics.
Could you offer any other pointers?
Tankx.

The EGR itself shouldn't have any electronics, it get very hot. Mine has only a vacuum line that goes to a sensor so you should be able to pull it of and clean it with out buggering up anything electrical. Its usualy the diaphrams that go on them though, and cleaning it probably wont help that. Good luck.

I think you may be confusing the IAC (idle air control) valve and the EGR. The IAC has a pintle on one end and an electronic stepper motor on the other.

All the EGRs that I've seen are vacume operated, with the vacume controled by temperature (wax) switch or electronical cycled (by the ECM).

Is this Vortec? If so then, yes ,cleaning the pintle may help .I use a fuel injection cleaning solution(motorvac) but carb. clean should work. Just cleaning might do it but more often than not I end up replacing that type of EGR valve. When you have it off , push the pintle in, it's spring loaded and should pop back up.Clean it until it works freely or replace it. Brett

Which code is it? 43?? I think that you are referring to the IAC as well. If so, clean with carb / fuel injector cleaner, DO NOT PUSH THE PINTLE IN, and reinstall. Idle should be much better.:)

The EGR valve used on 5.7 Vortec engines is completly electric, no vacuum control . It is VERY common for these to go bad and set a code. I think some of you may be confused about this. Brett
