Yep a simple turn to the right or stopping would have kept that entire triple back flip with a twist from happening.
Glad nobody got squished!
Imkunfused 04-30-2002, 10:46 AM from what i read on another post.. she was having steering problems all day long.. dont know if that prevented her from turning left or now.. glad to hear everyone is alright...
Kinda reminded me of tara shaffers roll in victorville.. just the roll with tara was a lot more voilent.. but she landed on her wheels
randii 04-30-2002, 10:52 AM So what's the scoop on Hell's Gate? Last I hear, the BLM deemed that closed.
Does anyone know the real story on this? And please, don't respond with "Folks are running it, so it must be open."

Hammer97 04-30-2002, 04:00 PM Must be a few folks checking it out. I have a DSL and its taking forever.
I will check it out tommorow.
Travis Waldher 04-30-2002, 07:02 PM You know what? had she followed the spotter and not gassed it when the nose came up..........
Bgcj5 04-30-2002, 07:12 PM That was one NASTY roll! I am glad to her everyone was ok. Next time listen to your spotter.
Sillyneck 04-30-2002, 07:47 PM wow that was rediculous and never should have happened. Was it inexperience or miscommunication? cause last time I checked when my left front tire is climbing a vert wall on my side I tend to hit the brakes and or clutch before I hit the point of no return. That gave me chills. Not especially the roll but the blatant loss off dollar bills as the thing churned itself into mince meat.
Damn glad everyone's okay.
I will have to pass this on to Mark and Wayne at O-R Fab. I am sure they will be interested in seeing it. Glad to hear she was O.K.

High5 05-01-2002, 02:26 AM heck slap a front clip, windshield frame, back passengers side wheel or axle that is bent, and a new cage and wheel it!

Last year I had a pretty heated phone conversation with Alex VanHemert of the Moab BLM office. He was very adamant that Hell's Gate was closed. I don't remember the exact reasoning, but it had to do with Hell's Gate not being part of the original trail and because the trail is located in the Sand Flats Recreation Area the creation of new routes is not allowed. Obviously this hasn't stopped people from running it, as I have heard several reports of people running Hell's Gate and never seeing a closed sign.
I'm with Silly and NE on this one. She messed up. Unfortunate as it is, the whole ordeal could have been avoided had she pushed in the clutch and not allowed the vehicle to walk itself over.
cm "been there ... didn't do that" k
fj40charles 05-01-2002, 11:31 AM Very nasty roll. I'm glad she is okay, but it looks like cockpit error on her part. She didn't follow the spotter and didn't know when to get off the gas.
I went up Hell's gate last year and it is not that bad.

You're right-it's not that bad. This was definitely pilot error.
Not saying that what I'm about to say is the case here, but I have seen time and again (especially in Moab) folks new to the sport putting all the goodies (lockers, tires, etc...) on their new rig without ever learning how to drive a 4x4 in the first place. They think since they have all the right parts that that qualifies them to run the gonzo trails.
An example that I always recall is a guy that I met when I lived in TX. He went with me to Moab one year in his cherry cj5 with all the goodies. He "learned" how to wheel by reading a book written by Mark Smith. On Behind the Rocks he proceded to go by the book and put it in 1st, foot off the brake, and go over White Knuckle hill. Damn near endo'd his junk and did succeed in breaking it. Pretty funny really

I totaly agree. I am just glad it was not a fatal mistake.:(
Nobody 05-01-2002, 12:32 PM wow:eek:
the frog 05-01-2002, 12:55 PM if you trust your spotter do exactly as he says.
if you don't - replace him.
did you see how the spotter signaled her to go right again and
again, untill all he could do was grab his head in his hands?!?!
definitely avoidable and definitely her not listenning to him:(
rockhog 05-01-2002, 01:27 PM I was just going to say the same thing. I think when the front end came up she lost sight of the spotter and just did her own
thing.
