Hey gang. I currently run my 86 SAS 4runner all over the place. And it is my daily driver and offroader.

But my work might be retiring a 94 XJ 2door. New auto tranny last year, and the I6. It really GOES!! I like the fact that it is only the 2 door (more cutting available), and that I might get it really cheap.

What are the things to look for. I am mainly a Toyota guy and am looking at this XJ for ONLY a trail rig.

It is an XJ sport.

What axels are stock under these? 30/35? please say 44.

Are there crawl boxes available for the Auto tranny?

how much lift do I need to do before my 33" Dirt Grips will fit under there? I am willing to cut and snort! Want Bigger Meats eventually.

I would be building a crawler, not a bogger.

94 is a good year. You will get the HO engine and better cooling system. You will most likely have the 27 spline 8.25" Chrysler rear. D30 in the front, but not with the larger 297 ujoints (started in 95.5 IIRC). I would look for EB running gear with 76-77 being the best years for the 44 and the 9". To run 33s I would shoot for about 4-5" of lift and some noce trimming.

The I6 engine is pretty bullet proof and idiot proof. Some folks have had cooling problems in which case you should change the radiator out to GDI 3 core (bout $100) or modine 4 core (bout $150).

good luck.

What he said, and...

The '94 may not have the dual diaphram brake power booster. But then again, it might if it's a late '94 model. The better power booster came out in '95.

The AW4 is a solid transmission. I recommend the biggest tranny cooler you can fit to protect it from over heating. I've never heard of a crawl box for it.

Most XJ's come with an NP231 t-case. It can be replaced with an Atlas II or beefed with a HD SYE and 4-1 kit. With the automatic and 4.56's or 4.88's you probably won't need the reduction in the t-case.
