: Will a link set up with the A on the bottom work?
Junkyard Slug 05-01-2002, 08:44 AM I am still trying to figure out how I should fab up my front links, and because of space I can't put an A link on top where I seem to see them most. Will they work as the bottom link?
Thanks all,
JYS
Gordon 05-01-2002, 10:25 AM Yep it works it is getting more comon in road racing cars with solid rear axles because it gets the roll center down lower. For a rock crawler some people think a low roll center is good because it keeps the drooped tire out farther for better stability, but it also makes the vehicle lean more in corners and on side hills if you have really soft springs. The coolest thing about a lower wishbone is it really protects the driveshaft
badassjeepguy 05-01-2002, 11:18 AM according to the herb adams book that is called a satchell link.... he says its one of the best setups......
Junkyard Slug 05-01-2002, 11:20 AM and a follow up question, which way would be better, the arms at the axle and the point at the frame or the point at the frame and the arms at the axle?
Thanks
JYS
badassjeepguy 05-01-2002, 11:27 AM bottom arms centered on diff and extended out to either frame rail............... uppper running wide on axle and kicked in a little almost straight..... from what i have read and seen.... it is just imho

They may be the prefered setup but i would not suggest running this on a truck, just think of the insane lose of ground clearance. I would suggest ditching the A arm idea and just run a triangulate 4 link

i agree 100% clearance would suck ass, and if the links are set up to move perfectly with the pinion, the d shaft will or could be interfering....... herb says its the best, but he is talkin street racing, would be cool to see one set up and see how/if it works....

You do realize that you just described the exact same thing, only in reverse?? :D
Gordon 05-01-2002, 01:27 PM I think he is talking about a front axle application where he doesn't have clearance for the wishbone on top. in the front with a high pinion diff the wishbone could be mounted to the axle tube very close to the center line and still clear the driveshaft, and have excelent ground clearance/sliding over rocks ability.
Also Walker evans S10 has this setup except with the arms extending back from the front of the truck to the front axle, instead of forward from the middle of the truck to the front axle. His solid axle desert racing jeeps used this setup too.
BAJG Herb adams thinks that is one of the best setups because it provides the lowest roll center. I haven't looked at his book in many years but he probably also talks about how it is dificult to setup without roll-oversteer. If you want minimal rollsteer on a 4x4 this is not the setup for you, but if you don't think rollsteer is a big deal and you have the fender clearance for the low roll center then go for it.
I have thought about using this setup for the drive shaft protection and position of the lower link to help slide the diff over things. I am not going to use it on the rear of my bronco though because If I have a rollcenter that low I would have to tub the wheelwells, and because I don't want that much rollsteer.
badassjeepguy 05-01-2002, 02:52 PM i agree gordon, i was just saying that herb says its good, i myself dont see it as a good application for offroad..... i will be triangilateing the upper, and running the lower basically straight.... at least thats what im thinkin today, my mind changes with the wind when it comes to links and such.... :D
CJ Lagos 05-01-2002, 03:24 PM I like it, number of reasons I did it.

:D and here i thought my eyes were misleading me and i got mislead by my eyes.:D
Junkyard Slug 05-01-2002, 04:50 PM Hey CJ Lagos, I've been reading your posts for a while and never looked over to see your in Richmond. I have about 90 acres in Currituck county, NC. That makes us almost neighbors. I have a few nuts and bolts questions for you, like what size and lenth did you use for your rod ends and links? Anything you would have done diffrently?
thanks,
JYS
pretty sure I wouldnt want the roll centre under the level of the axle so I would put the link convergence at the frame end
