: School me on hydraulic pumps.

I just bought a Pro-Tools 105 bender and I'm working on converting it to hydraulics. For all of the obvious reasons I really didn't want to go air over hydraulic, I want an electric hydraulic pump. I found a deal on this pump, and I bought it.

So after looking at it I'm not real sure that I will be able to use it. I think it probably came out of a snow plow, although I can't be sure because I've never actually seen a small truck mounted snow plow. Also, I think it's a single acting pump, and I think that the two wires coming out of the pump body are for solenoid operated valves, one to send pressure out the line and one to allow oil to return to the tank via that same line. Mind you that all of this is conjecture on my part, I've got the thing in hand to look at it, but have not messed with it much yet. I thought I'd ask some questions first.

The rub is, I've already bought a double acting cylinder and a four way valve, so I need a pump that can work with those. If I had just bought a single acting cylinder I think this pump would work just fine. I think that this pump could extend the DA cylinder, but there would then be no return line to get the oil back to the tank. So this gave me an idea. In the picture you can see that there is a large pipe plug in the tank. Would it be okay to plumb the oil return from the four way valve into that hole? I'm pretty sure that the actual purpose of that hole is to fill the tank, or possibly to put a vent in. You can't really see it in that pic, but there is a smaller hole next ro the big pipe plug that could be used for filling/venting/level checking if the big one were used for something else. Would that work, or do I need to keep looking for a different power pack?

I'll reply with the disclaimer that my only real pump experience is on my own OLD snow plow pump which doesn't look that much like yours. The first problem I see might be that it is a twelve volt pump and I would think 110volt would be more practical. My pump should push around 1750 lbs but is tired and only does about 1200 psi. I have four external solenoids 1 each for left and right rams and one for up and one to release pressure and let the plow fall down. The fill plug on mine is a vent. All of my cylinders are single action (left one pushes the right one back in). I'd be guessing at the rest but I think with your 4 way valve and a return line it would work on a double action cylinder. You'd have to be able to trigger the motor and the units solenoid to get fluid to your valve. I also think that these motors are basically starter motors and don't like to be run for long continuous periods (mine will kill my battery in a few cycles without the truck running). I've thought of using a powersteering pump and a 110 volt motor and pulley to run a hydraulic press. Not sure what type of pressure they generate but I've been saving a pump just in case for ten years! Another resource might be the forums at www.plowsite.com someone over there might be able to give you more concrete info. Trav

It actually looks like a power pack for running a dump bed or something, not a plow. You are on the right track with your diagnosis of what the wires are for. As said above, you could plumb a return line into the resivour instead of useing the solinoid control valve. You would still need some type of thumb switch to start the pump and open the solenoid outlet valve. I tried to run my bender w/ a pump just like that w/ a optima and a big battery charger. It worked okay, but was more problems then it was worth. I then built a hydro pump out of a saginaw pump, home made external resivour and 5 hp 220vac motor. It worked really well for quite a while before I finally blew the vanes out of the pump. I then ordered a .93 cubic inch gear type hydro pump from surpluscenter.com, got the pump and the pulley for a bit over $100. It works awesome.

Another concern with the 12v pump, is that I kind of doubt the resivour is big enough for running a 16" travel ram like you are likely to use on your bender.
