anybody do this swap in a yj or tj? any reason why i dont see any of them swapped into the jeeps? i have a 2001 dakota rt 5.9 engine waiting to go into my yj. i already have a nv4500 so all i will need is an input shadt and bell housing for the 5.9l. everything sounds good so far, is it really that easy?

while i wont claim to know anything about engine swaps, a buddy of mine here at Clemson University (btw ranked 12 in the AP poll) has a dodge 5.9L in his TJ. Schmozilla or KirbyIV could tell you more about it. Just letting you know its been done.

yeah, the 5.9 motor is great, tons of low rpm torque and decent hp as well. I agree, i don't know why you don't see more of them out there. Mine uses a built TF999 and and is mated to a Atlas 2 so i couldn't tell you much about the adapters, but its definitly a good powerplant for a build.

How much did the 5.9L cost?

I believe it came from a CJ, but can't quite remember. Its never given much trouble and has been extensively competed on and trail wheeled so i'd say its been through its paces. it is mildly built with race internals to help it stand up to the abuse. Only drawback is the lack of OD. I'll try to source some picks of the build and of the motor and tranny. Build was done over 6 years ago, so pics may be hard to come by.

I've got a 2001 5.9L sitting in my 80 CJ7. Mated it to a TF727 with a mopar housing and guts from a FSJ to get the shorter output and right spline count to mate to an atlas. Looks like driveshaft for the front should clear the pan without problem and I'll be wiring the engine ODBI to get around the pains of ODBII.
Lots of info out there on swapping into TJs. Check out

Novak sells the motor mounts, a descent cooling solution, and they used to sell the center dump headers, but I was able to find them from a local 4x4 shop instead. (http://www.novakconversions.com/)
