: Why FJ40's aren't as cool in Venezuela...
60seriesguy 05-01-2002, 12:08 PM ...is this 2002 FZJ71 you can get from any Toyota dealership in Venezuela. They come in 8 different colors and all the accessories you see on it are *dealer installed*. Coil suspension up front, leaf springs rear, part-time 4WD, 5-speed manual, fuel-injected 1FZ-FE Powerpack (three coils, no distributor). Think of the power to weight ratio! Factory power-steering, A/C, cloth seats (vynil seats optional), carpet (rubber mats optional), manual windows (power windows optional), power locks.
This picture was taken last weekend at a 4x4 Festival in Valencia, Venezuela and I thought you guys would like to take a peek! :)
Mustard Dog 05-01-2002, 12:18 PM Fawkin sweet:eek: :D :D Get me one:D
Co Pilot 05-01-2002, 12:22 PM Hey 60SeriesGuy... any info on the cost???
rustycruiser 05-01-2002, 12:29 PM That sure is a good looking Cruiser!
Stupid god damn Toyota not importing the good stuff to the USA. I piss on the UZJ100!
Not the same truck, but a 2002 FZJ78 pick up in South Africa retails for about $26,000 US. It has the same motor, running gear etc, but the vinyl seats and rubber msts are stock. Unfortunately, no shorty 70 available in the RSA, but do get 6 versions of the 100/105 from bare bones diesel solid axle, to loaded V8 IFS.
Ross
60seriesguy 05-01-2002, 12:32 PM The cost fluctuates with the exchange rates, which have been somewhat volatile of late, but if you wait for the right moment, the cost is about US$25,000 give or take. The used Land Cruiser market in Venezuela is even better, with the recent social and economic upheaval it's a buyer's market, you can get some amazing deals if you have the money.
rustycruiser 05-01-2002, 12:32 PM Sorry, heres the pic.
Sloan 05-01-2002, 12:55 PM Note to self, empty bank account and go to Venezuela to buy trucks.:D Why, why, why, why, why are we not getting those here???? :shaking:
Mustard Dog 05-01-2002, 12:59 PM How hard would it be to get one of those things into the country:confused: I'm sure a few people have looked into it;)
ckolloff 05-01-2002, 01:22 PM I have the summers off cuz I'm a teacher and another teacher buddy of mine and I have kicked around the idea of trying to drive to South America as an adventure.
 :smokin:
What is the possibility of driving to Venezula with 4-6 vehicles and coming back with 5-10? As much as I'd love to bring one back I could never afford it but I would go for the trip alone. Next summer?
sixty 05-01-2002, 01:25 PM What a beautiful machine.. hell it even makes the chrome grille look good  Imagine if that thing was fitted w/ a super charger or safari turbo!!! I've gotta have one :smokin:
60seriesguy 05-01-2002, 04:17 PM Bringing one into the country is not that tough as long as you don't mind owning a gray market vehicle and are conscious that the resale value will be 1/3 of what you pay for it. That as much as I'll say on a public forum about that.
I've already heard of a few FZJ71's with the Kazuma supercharger, by all accounts it's unreal. I've driven stock ones and they have more power than I've ever wanted in a Land Cruiser, think the same motor as an FZJ80 but without the power-robbing full-time 4WD and about 2,500 lbs less....
I wouldn't drive from here to Venezuela if you paid me, there is no way that I am driving through Colombia.
FWIW, when I shipped my FJ62 from Venezuela to the USA the 20' container cost $680 to the Port of Miami, and the prices haven't gone up that much since. You're probably looking at $800 to Miami, maybe $1,500 to Long Beach.
60seriesguy 05-01-2002, 04:22 PM Here's another shot of it. Look how *CLEAN* it is....DROOL!
RHINO 05-01-2002, 08:01 PM i think i would like to import one just to put the modern drivetrain under my 55, man that would be good.
oh and ckolloff, iff you drive there, much less alone, make out a will first, theres a good chance you wont make it alive.
DCruiser138 05-01-2002, 08:14 PM talk about inspiring words! lol....make a will...hah!:rasta:
orangefj45 05-01-2002, 09:05 PM me likes!:rasta:
BigRedFJ40 05-01-2002, 09:26 PM Something has to be done with Toyota USA!!!!!!! They keep giving us the shit that no other country wants and sell the good stuff above and below us. Can't they see by the number of early Cruisers on the road and the amount of parts being sold for those trucks that there is a market for them still....... I am sick of seeing J@#P's everywhere I look!!!!!!!! It would be so nice to be able to buy a REAL 4X4 from Toyota instead of the shit they sell here these days! I agree with Ross........ I piss on the UZJ100:mad2: :mad3: :mad2:
crawlin cruiser 05-01-2002, 09:42 PM the steering wheel is even LHD !!! ( i thought they were backwards like those crazy auzzies!)

ckolloff 05-02-2002, 06:29 AM Seriously, I should do some research but... how bad is it? :( Does anyone have any first hand experience in the countries that I would travel through. I would NEVER try to attempt it alone -But a self supported, well organized group with multiple vehicles would seem feasible to me. Or have I been :smokin: too much? With modern technology it should be possible to keep at least sporadic contact with civilation.
A will- really? As much as I would enjoy an adventure, I'm no toughguy and don't have a deathwish. I hoped to bullshit or play stupid through the sticky situations. People HAVE done it ALONE on MOTORCYCLE!!!! (I read an article in an old motorcycle mag years ago about this and that is what started the whole fanatsy)

The main country to look out for is Colombia all the others are safe in comparison. I read a story about two guys in a 4-runner who drove from california to Tierra Del Fuego & drove thru colombia. they hired a couple of local guides & made it safely. this was a few years ago & things have gotten worse there. Anyone who is not dirt poor is a prime target for kidnap & ransom. It is possible to travel thru there... just not very safely. on the other hand you can take a ferry from Panama to Equador or Venezuela & skip Colombia all together.
60seriesguy 05-02-2002, 01:53 PM To give you an idea, when the Mesoamerica 2000 expedition (which launched from Colorado Springs) got to Colombia, they pulled a lot of strings to secure a full blown military escort, and even then they were only allowed to travel during the day. If you don't have similar contacts, I wouldn't advise trying something like that.
On the way North there are a few places of concern, *especially* for some of you more fair-looking GRINGOS. Colombia, Nicaragua and the southern Mexican state of Chiapas area all notoriously unstable, and driving a Land Cruiser that's worth more than the entire village through some of these areas is *not* the wisest thing.
I speak the language and can handle the Third World idiosyncracies, but I cannot blend with the locals and that would single me out. Personally, I wouldn't do it.

ranger 05-02-2002, 09:19 PM Your not safe anywhere in South America. Unless you go with someone who is from the area. If they think that you have money or have family members they think will have money, your in deep shiznat! Used to have a GF from Peru, pretty scary stuff down there.......:skull:
