The background:

I picked up a '78 F250 with a swapped in 460, C6....My problem is that the PO "lost" the fan shroud and he put a flex fan on that sits about 2-3 inches from the radiator. Surprise, Surprise it runs hot. So my question is when I go PNP shopping, do I need a clutch/fan from a 460 or will one work from pretty much any ford v8? This is my first gas ford, so I don't know a whole lot about them and what swaps from one to another.

Thanks,
Jack

you will need one from a 460 perferably! if not a 460 at least a big block or even some diesels!

well it all depends, you might be able to use a fan off of a 400/351m. but if you are running hot, i would reccomend not only putting a shroud back on it, but swapping over to a non clutched fan (fixed fan) i know my 77 with a 400 came with a fixed fan, and i just ditched the Clutched fan on my 79 in favor of a fixed fan setup..... j/y parts shouldnt be no more than 40 bucks for fan, pulley, spacer block and shroud.......

ive been running my truck (400M) for 2 years without a shroud and it never over heats, why not just goto the local yard and get a electric fan? be easier to find and they toss out some killer air

Over the summer I went through 3 different Hayden fan clutches (all new) and none of them worked-wouldn't lock up, even when engine was running damn hot (F-250 tow rig with 460) now hat winter is closing in it shouldnt be an issue, but when spring arrives, I will either go with a non-clutch fan or an electric.

Thanks. I guess it's Taurus fan time.
