i just bought an fj40 it has what appears to be a fullfloater rear axle with a cable locker same offset and width as a regular cruiser rearend. is anyone familiar with these? i have never seen one before. do the take the same gears as regular cruiser third?

yes i have seen and know a buddy running this same setup. he is running a early 80's 40 non usa full float with the 90-93 fj80 rear locker his was the elecric locker there was also a cable locker around the same years as i have seen these too. he has a stock axle shaft from a cruiser call marv at spector and he can tell you exactly what it came in on the non usa full float because they have a longer splined shaft for the dog clutch to slide back and forth. post a pic and lets see.

If its Toyota (sounds like it is) then yes, it uses the same standard rotation ring and pinions as a regular Landcruiser axle, however the install kit (bearings) might be different on the differential. If its an early FJ40 FF, they use a bolt on spindle if I recall correctly. Later FF's have a intregal spindle, use hubs similar to the front. The later stuff is very similar to the 80 series stuff (spindle nut design, inner axle seal, dust seals, etc) with the exception of the discs on the 80.

They were OEM in 1984 to 1989 BJ71 and BJ74s.
K084 code.
The same diff also was used in the HJ61 from 86 till 89.
It is a K series axle and takes the same gears as the semi floating axles that you got over there.
It will have the parking brake in the axle.
The original spring mount width is a tad wider than the 40 series but not a lot, like 15mm or so.
The cables and shifters are still available new but the diff was delisted this past spring (April 1st). If you have the OEM shifters it will look like two big meaty handles that hang under the dash.
The side bearings are smaller than the non-locking units.
The short side axle shaft will have 11 cm of 30 spline on the inside end.
I run this diff front and rear with 5.29 gears, no fitting issues at all as no silly pin in the middle of the diff case. My front housing is a BJ74 and the rear is a HZJ77 housing with disks, the diff will fit all the rear housings, even the 80 series.
If you get real stuck email me for parts, but by all means try local first.
