Does anyone know anywhere where I can get some technical info on some rockwell 5-tons?

I bet the older monster trucks shops could help you out. They all used to run rockwell 5 ton stuff. Also, check out clarktruck.com I know they've dealt with them.

Hey these should get you drooling. I THINK these are rockwell 5 tons but I could be wrong. These are pics i took at Clark Trucks from when I picked my 2.5tons up.

What are you building that you need 5 tons for?

I wasn't planning on building anything with them right now. I was just going to look into them to see how much they could be shaved, if hubs can be flipped, how wide they are, breaks, etc. Not really a realistic inquiry, just curious.

Talk to Bigfoot in St. Louis. They are very knowledgable and friendly people. And, of course, they have been dealing with big axles for a long time.

we buy the parts for our 5-tons from Memphis Equipment. they have all the parts and service manuals. the only problem we have (had) is breaking the original axle shafts. now that we have broken all the original shafts, and new ones have been installed, none have broken. oh, these are still under the military Kaiser mid-70's 5-ton trucks. i pulled out the Continental I-6 and 5-speed trannies and installed 300hp Cummins with Road-Ranger trannies. these trucks now pull 25 cu.yard belly-dump trailers in a mobile sand-and-gravel outfit. 25 yards of wet pit-run (pre-processed sand and gravel) weighs about 75,000 lbs...i guess low gear and a cummins is gonna break something...matt

Did you come to pick your Rockwells up at Clark??? Thats so cool, its about 10 min from my house. The place i work is actually relocating, so we will be Clarks neighbors. I didnt know they were so famous. I know they make water trucks out of the 6x6's and sell them to CHina as fire trucks.

You can get new 14 bolts strapped to a pallet for $500 down there, with 4.56's and a detroit. They have a lot of pass drop D60's too. If ya dont mind me asking how much did you give for the rockwells at Clark. around $1k?

Yeah, been there twice so far! Once to pick them up and then back again to trade my non-steering rear for a front axle. I ended up paying about $1200 but he cut me a deal for some problems I ran into with the rear they gave me.

Haha that sounds good. Last time I got lost at like 6:30 when it was dark on the first right before you take the left to their place. I got turned all around back in there with my trailer, what a mess.

LOL, dude you got lost....hehehe
Did you get off at the Nitro exit#45? Man you dont wanna get lost around that area, there are some rednecks that are freakin crazy. Glad to hear you made it outta the holler ok. If you took a right about 1-2 miles after the Pilot gas station then you were just heading back towards the Cross Lanes exit, actual civilization.

LOL, Clark has some seriously big stuff. good prices too.

My gawd! I didn't realize that the diffs were tha huge! I guess that eliminates them for swapping into a rockcrawler! :D Just out of curiosity, what is the gear ratio in those things?

SPOOLINAROUND:
I assume the 60's are new, but could be remanned. I know a guy that bought 3 sets of 60/14 bolt combos. Actually 1 pair was in the green CJ in last years TTC, they actually took another set as spares. I have no clue on pricing. check them out at:

Really do you have a picture of that? I'm sure you can shave the heck out of them if you run the 6.44 gears cuz the housing holds all the way up to like a 10.something.

I can't show you pics, but I would just like to take this opertunity to congratulate you for actually searching. It is so refreshing to see a noobie who does what he is suppossed to do before just vomiting out the question in a new thread. And I think it is cool that you did it so well that you actually found this ANCIENT thread to bring back to life. Bravo!

I just did a search for this last week and this thread never came up in the three diffrent times I entered a search I must be doing something wrong I guess. I was looking for info on this same thing due to the fact I just got two fronts and two rears given two me for free in the form of a comlete running and driving, 1953 5 ton 6x6 and one spare front axle from a mack cement truck chasis. These axles are huge but look like you could shave off alot from the bottom. Isnt the gear in these like 6:72 though. Now I am just looking to trade off everything for parts for a different project I have.

Well thanks, I try despite what some of the egotistical dickheads in my other thread think. So what do these newer axles come under? What does "newer" mean? Are these the ones with the 50 ratio choices? Are they made by rockwell(or that company that makes them?) I sympathize with that last guy....I wish there were more tech articles that sumurized what the TWO MILLION posts say about each topic. Searching is for the birds. And I hate birds.

To my knowledge there never was one with 50 gear choices. 3 was the most I think. There ARE some top-loader-type axles that come in dumptrucks and the likes that are more modern that have a lot of gear options though. I think a lot of them are made by Mack.

My bad, does anyone run those mack axles? And does anyone have a picture of the factory shaved 5ton or their own version?

People should look into the front steering axles on those 6x8 cement trucks. They steer for trucks that weigh 73280lbs, they shouldn't break too easy.. :)

Some of the Mack axles are actually very high clearance when compared to a Rockwell. I've never seen a steering axle though.
