: need reasons to get welder (to convice my dad)
hey its daver 05-01-2002, 09:35 PM I need a reason to have my dad buy a welder or help me pay for one, I just bought my truck, paid for a bunch of stuff that needed to get done before would let me drive it.. (oil pump, windshield). I'm completely broke till summer when my parents will let me get a job... What's a reason I could use to get a welder??
hey its daver 05-01-2002, 09:36 PM Maybe I can say it will be a father-son project :D
MattS 05-01-2002, 09:47 PM Take a welding class at school. Then tell your dad you have homework and need a 220V Miller MIG to do your homework. You will need leathers, auto hood of course!! :D
hey its daver 05-01-2002, 10:13 PM The class isn't offered at my school, i'm in auto-shop though.. I was planning on taking a welding class at a local jc, but I don't really have the time to make the communte for each class...
I was thinking of trying to convince him into this welder http://www.welders-direct.com/merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=WD&Product_Code=500416 . It says it operates off of 230 volts  How much is it approx. to have a 220v line/outlet installed?
LOS-YJ 05-01-2002, 10:21 PM Tell him you might be ghey:rainbow: and your thinking about some black mule cock, but the one thing that will get that ghey shit off your mind is a real nice welder and if you get it you can play with it and feel like a real man again......It worked for me :smokin: :smokin: :smokin: :smokin:
MattS 05-01-2002, 10:47 PM If you have a dryer you can get an extention cord made and run it from there. I wired my own plug in and cord on a new breaker. I think it cost me $50 or so. This wire is expensive mine is a 20 ft cord.

Moab Austin 05-01-2002, 11:03 PM tell him you can fix stuff around the house (fench or whatever) cars whatever....
and that it willl save you money on your truck..and that you will learn a trade to fall back on when the economy crashes and nobody needs office people anymore...
and that you want to know a trade so you can work hard like he had to when he was younger, because you see all your freinds and notice that they don't no the value of a dollar...
and tell him that you can make bullet proof mailbox..
and tell him that you can make handcuffs so he can lock your mom up and go bang her!!!:D
BTW I have the miller 175 (cousins) and really like it..very good machine!!
Dick Hertzer 05-02-2002, 05:29 AM If you have to ask why you need a welder, you probably don't need one. Sorry, but damn, read the board and there are about a million 4x4 projects that require the use of a welder.
WLD4X4 05-02-2002, 05:51 AM Tell him it will keep you from getting into trouble.:mad3:

I have the same welder. REAL happy with it. Nice machine for the price and a good DYI machine for a weekend welder. If you were going pro I wouls say step up to the Miller (little better drives and infinate adjustable power) but for a home shop it's just about perfect.
Travis Waldher 05-02-2002, 08:16 AM 1)What are you going to use the welder for??? That tells you how big of one you need to go.
2) If you need to ask how to install a 220 circuit in your house. You may not be ready yet. ;)
3) When you go to get the welder... pick the one you think you'll need. then get the biggest one you can possibly afford. I caught shit for getting my Millermatic 210 instead of a smaller unit. In the end though I was happy... I ended up doing some major work to a trailer I never counted on.

My dad couldn't give two shits if I grinded off the stock hangers and welded on new ones to accomidate my new chevy springs so that I could get more flex on the trail.
I asked for reasons to tell him why WE (as a family) need a welder.
dangerber 05-02-2002, 11:05 AM If you need to convince your DAD to get you a welder, I wish you good luck! If he doesn't already have one, he probably isn't the type of guy that is onto modding stuff. Hell my dad taught me to weld when I was 7 years old!! :D

Hell, taught you to weld at age 7, and NOT TO PICK UP THAT DAMN STUFF until it is nice and cool! :D
Daver... tell him you will build him some nice metal shelving once you have the welder... BBQ Grill? Repair the broken handle on the lawn mower? If possible... sign up for a welding class.
Funny one... my 12 year old has asked for a ATV. $2400 is a bit out of my pocket... told him to start saving. This morning he asked "if I save 2/3, will you pay the remaining 1/3". Hmm when I paused for a moment, he explained his goal is to $1600 and would I pay the remainder. Hmm... I said yes. Now I am wondering what he is going to do to make $1600 over the summer (Hmm... wonder if he has been underbidding a couple of my metal projects?) :D
