My buddy has a 79 Ford Short Stepside 4x4 with a 351>C6>NP205. He wants to swap in a 4-speed T-18 or T-19(not sure which it is, keep getting them confused).

Will the NP205 bolt up to the 4-speed?

Yes, provided that it is a 4x4 trans, all of the full size ford trucks had the same t-case bolt pattern and spline count. The only thing you may run into, is some of the later model extension houseings (the part between the trans and tcase) are not notched for tht np205 shift rail. You can notch it useing a gasket for a pattern. Be carefull though, the the later model extension houseings are cast aluminum, not cast iron like the old ones. You will defenitely have to build a transfercase mount to keep some weight off the houseing if it is the aluminum one.

Cool. Thanks man! Ford is a rather grey area in my expertise, but Im learning slowly but surely as our 4x4 club grows and we are finally starting to get more blue oval guys.

Will the T18 need a new crossmember, or would it be able to adapt to the C6 crossmember?

My Big block C6 and BB T18 measured exactly the same from the edge of the bell to the back of the extension houseing. My SB NP435 was the same over all length as well, but one of the two manuals had a longer extension houseing to make up for the shorter trans length, I forgot which one was which. The crossmember mounts may be different, but I really dont think so, should be a pretty well bolt in deal.

You can use the same crossmember, you will just have to move it forward a bit.

A little off topic....has anyone done a 351W/c6/205/kluneV?

I'm pretty sure you don't have to move the crossmember, just flip the mount around that sits on the crossmember. I had to do this on my truck.

Typcially, you need to move the 205 side frame mount forward 3 inches when going from auto to manual on a 1/2 ton witha 205. The holes are already in the frame, so it's no big deal.

This assumes you have the long output shaft (and adapter) C6. If you have the short output shaft/adapter C6, most likely your truck started life with a 203 case and someone swapped in a 205. You also won't have a CV shaft in the front if you have the short C6 and 205 (it don't fit).

just to add to the topic, you have to use the long adapter if you wanna continue running the C6. the pan on the C6 will get in the way of the front output. i found that out the hard way unless you can find a way to clock the case down a few degrees.

when I did my c6 to 4 spd swap the cross member for the trans did not move on the 78 bronco.

the t18 is the longer trans the 435 is much shorter. you can clock the 205 just let it drop down and bolt it back up. had the same problem when i tried to put a 205 behind my 86 bronco c6

The T-18 is 1" longer than the NP435..but the T-18 with its T-case adapter and the NP435 with its T-case adapter are the same overall lenght assembled..which is why both fit in the same space in the 78/79 Broncs that came with either tranny..
