: getting your 4x4 appraised for insurance?

I just signed on with a new insurance company today and want to have my Bronco insured for all the stuff I've done to it. Has anyone had their 4x4 appraised? What are some do's and don'ts before I bring it in to have it appraised?

I've got some not-so-small dents on both doors and rear quarters- basically the sides are pushed in a couple inches, non repairable. I'm wondering how much this will affect the value or if they'll reject insuring the truck because of that.

Oh, and I run two sets of wheels/tires on it- a set of 35" BFG CORR tires (very low tread) on 17x10 AR Atlas wheels and a set of 38.5x15 Gumbos (1/2 tread) on rusty 15x10 chrome wheels. Which set should I have on when I get it appraised?

Thanks all :)

With all the rigs that have been ripped off this year, it's not such a bad idea.

I've got some good $$$ into mine .

Make sure it's clean. These people are picky. Point evetyhing out to him. Our appraisal was pages long. He was very detailed which helps the value and get ready to pay for the premium .

I had mine appraised at a dealer that sold 4x4s. It was very simple. As far as premiums. My policy only went up $6 every six months. That is for a $4500 stated value policy. Not a big policy, but better than nothin.

I had mine appraised at a local corvette shop and the owner knew all about my CJ during the building. So when it was done i took the truck over to him with all my receipts and we looked it over. everything added up and the labor included also he appraised it at $60K. i took that to my insurence company and they accepted the appraisal and started the insurence. Before i added my CJ my insurence was $2400 for just my 2000 expedition. now with my CJ and my expedition it is $2500 a year. also every year i have the abilty of increasing the value of my CJ by $10k without having to get it re appraised, every $10k is a extra $10 a year. So i now have it insured for $65k. My insurence rocks, but i had to sware to them that i would never be in a 'race' with my CJ.

Your 88 bronco with bashed in sides is probably worth alot more in the blue book without someone looking at it. If you have someone actually appraise they're gonna say it's a beater. I mean do you really have anything of value in it? You're best bet is to just say you've got an 88 bronco.

I dunno... KBB lists it as $3800. That's checking every option box, and adding a winch, bull bar, tires, etc. Considering you'd be lucky to get a check from the insurance co for $3000.... that might pay for a 460 swap and some axles after you buy a new truck with your own cash.

I'd much rather have a stated value policy, even if it's only for $6000.

Dustin: clean up that hackjob wiring harness before you take it in. :flipoff2:

I don't know what insurance co. you're using, but I just told my AAA rep a price and he said ok. All I had to do was bring in pics that showed specifically all the things on there that are worth much. In case anything WERE to happen, you'll need all your reciepts to prove the work. My 87 RC bluebooked at like $2000 and I told them it was a replacement value of $16k and it wasn't a problem. Hope that will work for you. You might want to bring in a list of all your major mods and the value to show them too.

I am sure he did. We use to have AAA, till a buddy lost a 2000 TJ. The TJ was a well built Sahara, AAA wouldn't even give him enough to replace it with a stock one:flipoff2: . This boy had all his recieps. If you really care about your junk, you need a good company like farmers. Just my .02.

$2400:eek: for how many years??? I'm never gonna complain about $600 a year ever again.

For my trail rig, State farm just asked for a picture and how much I wanted to insure it for. It's only insured for a few thousand, so the process may be different for high $$ rigs.

As soon as I pull out of the garage (2.5 month build-up) next week I'm heading to State Farm and asking about insuring my YJ for $30,000. I've been wondering if they'll want an appraisal or if they'll just say sure and here's your rate increase. Either way I'll figure out what the increase would be and update then. Glad to see I'm not the only one worried about theft

Insurance on the bogger alone is $2000.00 per year .
This includes appraised value on it (the appraisal was very detailed with 3 rolls of film ) plus off road liability insurance which is expensive. The more extreme the mods , the higher risk they consider the liability . The insurance considers the truck extreme and very high risk. I really had to shop around for a company that would take me on. They especialize in high risk policies.
I also am NOT covered for racing.

Most appraisers will appraise your rig for whatever you want them to if you ask

I pay an inflated price for my FARMERS, but they'll pay on ANY claim, I don't think of changing anymore!
Same dealio- NO racing coverage!

Thanks for all your replies, I appreciate it. The blue book value on my Bronco is $2600 or so not accounting for any of my mods. I have $2500 in my 460/C6 swap alone and I've got the suspension, axles (gears and locker), and tires/wheels to account for.

The company I'm with now is American Family Insurance., anyone have any comments about them? I now have collision w/$500 deductible on the Bronco. My old company wouldn't even allow any collision coverage on either of my trucks because of age ('88 Bronco and '91 f-250) and Am Fam is still $475 cheaper per year.

I'm just finishing my buildup and just in parts i've got over 10 grand into it, and thats not including the original truck. Is there a way to insure for theft, but not get collision? i'm not really worried about denting it up, and if i roll it before i finish the exo i'll either just throw another tub on it or tube it out. I figure if the body gets fawked i can fix it, if the whole thing is gone i cant.
