: Long Range fuel tanks???
Deep South Cruisers 05-02-2002, 07:46 AM I really need to bite the bullet on this but I need some advice from the cruiser guys. I found 2 long range fuel tanks for my FJ60 but they don't SEEM comparable.
S.O.R. - 50 gallon - $845.00 + shipping
M.A.F. - 42 gallon - $499.00 + shipping
I am very aware of MAF's history on customer service but the price difference makes me wonder. Do any of you guys have any info or advice???
Patiently waiting;)

Cruiser Ken 05-02-2002, 09:19 AM Just from the pics I like the SOR one better. Looks more complete and like it has all the connections you need. Also something to consider, you will get a 15% discount in May for being a SOR club member. When you buy something over $400 they automatically make you a member because the savings pays for itself on that single item. So the cost will be:
$849 - 15% +39 for membership = $760 (a little better).
Disclaimer, I haven't used either one. Was considering the SOR tank before I sold my FJ60.
Sloan 05-02-2002, 09:33 AM One thing you want to think sbout is that you are doubling your fuel weight. Will your rear springs be able to do this without sagging. Let me see what I can find out locally.:p I think SOR is from Opposite Lock since he does a lot of business with them.
60seriesguy 05-02-2002, 10:03 AM Sloan's right, the SOR tank is from Opposite Lock, but I'm pretty sure it's a LongRanger tank, which is sold through OL. I've also seen both and prefer the SOR one, despite the fact that you must drill a couple of big holes into the rear cargo area floor to mount it, whereas the MAF one mounts to the frame only.
One thing I don't like about the MAF one is the drain located directly underneath (potential for rock damage)....
Sloan 05-02-2002, 10:07 AM www.longrangeautomotive.com.au I have been in contact with them about water tanks and they do ship to this country. Prices seem a litlle cheaper even though I never said that.:D
rustycruiser 05-02-2002, 12:19 PM Isn't the MAF tank also the one that is actually 37 gallons, not 42? I remember reading about one of the 60 series tanks being smaller than advertised, and "think" it is the MAF one. Comments?
Ross
Sloan 05-02-2002, 12:34 PM If that is true (37) gallons that wouldn't be that bad. 50 gallons of fuel is gonna weigh an a$$load. Also more importantly see who's tank will let you retain stock fuel pump, sending units, blah, blah, blah...
60seriesguy 05-02-2002, 01:56 PM Both tanks are compatible with US-spec 60 series but not FJ62's, which have the high pressure fuel pump inside the tank.
And Ross is right, the MAF tank is indeed something like 38 gallons, but I suspect that's the result of the conversion between Imperial gallons and US gallons. That's the same reason why when Canadians quote the fuel mileage of their diesel Cruisers it always sounds so outrageous.
I used to have a 180-liter fuel tank on my first FJ60 and when it was full, the truck sat lower than an El Camino in Compton! :flipoff2:
RHINO 05-02-2002, 04:29 PM you guys keep mentioning how heavy the added gas is, but if you only fill it halfway when not going"out" it wont way more, oh wait, maybe the tank doesnt work if its only filled halway, hmmm i better get more info on this
:flipoff2: :flipoff2:

LOL I can see how an extra 400 lbs of fuel might do that...
Sloan 05-03-2002, 09:53 AM Check out www.aerotank.com they have a 40 gallon tank and they're pretty reasonable. Also check out a tank called the Long Ranger from Australia. They have some info about them on the ARB site and here's a pic of one of them installed.:D
calfj60 05-04-2002, 05:53 PM hey henry, you still drivin that lowered el camino? just kidding:p You still working on the rear disk brakes or are you onto another project? Talk with you soon

Any suggestions for similar issue (tank too small) for a 76 FJ 40? Thats now being used as daily driver....
Chris
Sloan 05-05-2002, 11:45 PM www.man-a-fre.com They have several nice examples of extended range tanks, as muc as it pains me to say it.
pismojim 05-06-2002, 04:06 PM I have the MAF "42" gallon tank in Knuckles. I like it. IIRC, it's a Long Ranger 150LT.
Yes, it only holds 37 gallons, but so what? That's a lot of fuel. Full, it's a heavy load so make sure you have good springs. Heavy OMEs were fine for me.
It doesn't hang down that much and the drain is OK as far as I can tell. Especially if you're SOA. You can see it in this picture:

and, (SOA on 31's)

It's been Rubicon proven. Filled up in Placerville, drove the 'con, around Tahoe, down hwy 50, and filled up in Westley (south of Stockton). I was impressed.
The install is pretty easy and all the stock smog evap stuff works with it. It uses the stock sending unit (with extended arm) and the stock guage goes through the full range of the tank. Nice.
You can even pass a gas station and pretend to be getting good fuel mileage - until you finally stop get the bill for filling it up.;)
Good luck,
heavytlc 05-05-2004, 04:50 PM I found this thread. I am looking for a replacement tank for my new fj60. I just called SOR and they no longer have a tank. I tried the dealer for the MO1 recall, waiting for reply. I would like to get a larger tank, and I would not be very happy having the dealership touch my truck(just cut rockers, and rear quarters, new seats, carpet, door panels, paint) Is there any option other than Man A Fre?
Mike El Paso 05-05-2004, 06:18 PM I have the Man-A Fre tank. I like it, never hit it yet. It was an easy bolt in.

pismojim 05-05-2004, 10:56 PM Wow, a two year old thread. creepy
Another two years and the MAF tank is still fine. I finally put a little dent in it thanks to the ToyBox crawler gears allowing me to take stupid lines over big rocks.
I'd say go for it.

Radd Cruisers 05-05-2004, 11:03 PM We have a long range unit coming for Opposite Lock, I will take some photos of the install whe it shows next week. Looks like a classy piece of work..........
heavytlc 05-06-2004, 07:53 AM I emailed opposite lock, and they said $700, contact Man A Fre. I do not think a two year old thread is creepy. All of the info I found in other searches was also in this thread. It just makes the search work better for the next guy.
I guess the tank from Opposite Lock is the only one? Man a Fre, here I come.
