I just got my longer shackles done yesterday, and was wondering something. I extended them 1-1/4" It doesn't sound like much, but it looks like quite a bit.
Should I be putting a connector between the two. Like and "H"?? I would hate to have these things fold on me.
PS: They are made from 1/4" steele plate. and are 1-3/8" wide *I think* whatever the factory dimensions are except 1-1/4" longer.

1/4" might work if you run a center support, but 3/8 would be better.

That's what I was thinking.. I have some 1/4" shackles in the rear of my trail rig that I fabbed "real quick" when I did the rear SOA... but they're stock 3" c-to-c length.
Anything taller (and even for those, I wanted to) I grab the 3/8" strap. :)
The 2" extended BCB shackles I bought way-back-when were 2x3/8" sides with the same to build an H in the center.. quite heavy duty.

John even welded "BCB" on the cross-pieces..

I was just gonna run-em and find out for myself, I'm glad I asked. I will add a support to them. On the rears I will go with 3/8"
Thanks for the info.

I would go 2" x3/8" for anything very long and still put a cross bar in them, 1/4" probley will last, i ran some 1/4" ones for awhile i had no problems with them but they sure looked week, i built my new ones out of 2"x3/8" with a 2" tube welded in the center they look tough and weigh probley 4lbs apiece

I agree ~ the 1/4" plate 'aint going to cut it'. When you end up replacing them, let me know, we make our shackles out of 3/8"x2" plate, crossbar is included, as well as Grade8 hardware.
Got Beef?

I just got my shackels today from D and C. And I have to say they are damn sexy. They are really heavy duty and come with grade 8 hardware. I would recomend them to anybody looking for some.

I think I used 1/2"x2" for mine and so did Abba. Of course our rear shackles come close to 9"-10" long.
Anyway, I paid about $20 for the metal at a local scrap yard and about $10 for all the hardware. Pretty cheap if you ask me :D :D :D Of course the drilling was a PITA
