View Full Version : Anyone want to play the "Let's help SD design his front bumper?"

I'm running outta time (Serious issues with some of the Shit that I have had done for me:mad: ...) and I will need to slap a bumper together rather quickly..however, I can't seem to figure out a design. I was thinking about a stinger (Big hoop tying the two spring hangers together) or something that might help save the hood should I get stupid...Currently, the winch fairlead mounts to the crossmember, but I can move it out onto the bumber if need be. Here is a blank ic to start from...if you don't have a star, just modify the pic and e-mail it back to me and I'll post it.
TIA

Here's one that I drew up real quick...
BTW, I don't know if it matters..but the Scout won't be white much longer...

Edit: It's kinda hard to see but there are bars that are attached to the frame on the side with support bars at an angle...

Are you sure mounting it to the spring hangers is a good idea? I assume they're pretty solid, but if you have doubts.. I see you slamming something hard with the stinger, and ripping the spring hangers off at the same time..

BTW, how about some details on the hows and whys of building a stinger.

Scoutillac claims he put his on just cuz it looked cool. :D

Why don't prerunners use such huge monsters? How high should it be.. how far out.. blah blah..

Why do I need one? Because everyone else has one? or is there really a good use for it. :D

Hey, I was just going to ask about that.. something to protect the turn signals and frontal sheetmetal a bit from the sides would be a good idea.

You could also run up from the outer edges to the stinger for more strength.

Just don't block the signals. ;)

I'm not totally sold on the REAL high stinger...I kinda like the pre-runner look also...I'll see if I can do another one here in a little bit...

A REMOVABLE stinger that was still strong enough to be effective would be sweet. And HELL YEAH mount it to the spring towers (down low)

This pic kinda demonstrates the remove ability factor but not the stinger design. Notice the four bolts on each?

Basic, protect the fedners design. without comprimising the approach angle too much.

Another, this will protect your fender corners from being crushed in a roll.

How about something similar to this (daily driver) except leave off the lower part for better approach angle.

Lacking a redstar and a photochop program worth a shit, here's what a PO installed on my Terra

_______
O|______|O
|_________|

it's rough, but here goes.
The O's are the head lights, and the very top bar is level w/ the hood.
the middle bar goes from fender to fender right under the lights, with uprights to the inside of the lights going to the top bar, and uprights @ the outside edge going to the bumber (6" tube). all other bars are 2" square tube.

It isn't terrible ugly, seems pretty antelope-proof, and doesn't cause too many approach problems. I'd use something other then round tube for the bumper, but it's done and welded to the frame, so I'm not going to mess w/ it.

Oh I didn't know we were to spend 2hrs doing these. I jotted all of those together in a matter of 5 minutes.

Sorry, maybe I'll try again later.

Okay...

So far, I think that Scoutaliac might have the closest thing to what I'm looking for.

Hayraker gets the best use of art work award...

Hooper...that's just mean:flipoff2:

And Cliffhanger...I actually like the third from the top...might work something like that in...however, it's not going to be pink...sorry
:( :D

only took 3 minutes fucker:flipoff2:

Just use the straight line (pencil) for everything, its a lot quicker, and don't use pink;)

Do you really need the bumper for the May trip? Get the thing running first then worry about bumpers, chrome, and paint. What's left besides bumpers?

Ummm..I get to make my own custom brake caliper supports for the front now...as of right now, I gots no brakes.

Need to reassemble the front axle and finish up the tierod and drag link...it should be on it's wheels by this weekend..then I need to finish the cage (I keep saying this).

Getting my Fuel cell from Jimmy this weekend so I have to put that in also.

And I still need to work all the bugs out before the Con.

I'm feeling a little more confident after I talked to my Axle guy and he explained how to make the caliper supports.

OK. Tomorrow I will make you a bumper like Scoutillac, and I will leave it black. Enough playing for one day, I have to go home and mow the lawn. ;)

Thanks for being a good sport.

what about something like this? Can't beat the approach angle, and keeps it simpe. Never mind the trussed z-link, that's going the way of the dodo, replaced with hi-steer.

This has been fun to go through - anyone want to try this with a Scout II now????

Pat, I like the creative art work but the rainbow was a bit much.

I am glad to see creativity is still used on this board. And it's been very informative.

Yeah, I have been meaning to get a pic of my SII so I could design a bumper, if you have a good one I will take a stab at it.

Not a great picture but gives a basic shape of a 197X Scout II - no grill to confuse anyone.
http://home.off-road.com/~nwmud/images/76nose.jpg My project is still a ways off from needed a front bumper - but hey planning now and can keep an eye out for materials if you know what your building. BTW I plan to have a 8274 on the front bumper. So please keep that in mind while making pretty pink pictures of my truck.... :D

How about these

Cliffy [JD]
05-03-2002, 01:59 PM
The only profile shot I have is of my scout so here's that same bumper from the side.

Cliffy [JD]
05-03-2002, 02:03 PM
I would need a top shot to show the rest of the design, these two angles don't show it all, anyway. at the ends of the bumper you can see it angles up, and if there was a top shot, it would also show the bumper angles Back two. This way you can get a lot of your approach angle back that you lose with the winch mount area. which is in the middle.

does that make sense?

Ya done better on the last one. I like.

Never mind you doin' my rig. That's just too nasty.

WTF? When did bumper design become such a hotly debated topic? Just weld up some metal, bolt or weld it on and your fawk’n done. And quit with the freak’n Land Rover brush guard designs. Are you girls getting soft?

I don't see the need for one on your rig..

Doubt I will run one, if I do it will be just a couple bars on the sides but it's a way down my list..

Ooops, 7 year old thread :p
