What do you all use to cut axle splines?
I have a 3 in 1 machine as big as the home owner models get, 40" bed 13" swing on the lathe I forget the mill head specs but basicly I want to be able to cut and spline my own blanks and I have few projects which require splined shafts.

I have worked out a way to cut inside splines, it is painfully slow but works. pretty much consists of brazing a peice of shaped carbide to a borring bar blank and draging it through the hole till I reach the right depth. If you know an easier way let me know:D

My question is what tool do you use to cut splines in hardened shafts? I have made a fixture to hold the shafts and index them but every tool I have pruchased either chatters till it breaks the carbide or rounds the HHS.

There are so many products at Enco, Mcmaster and such I can't seem to find the right one. maybe it is my machine but It seems to do fine on the other projects I have thrown at it. Stainless, 4340, 4130, and turning seal surfaces on axle blanks. pluss a million little jobs.

thanks in advance
Wayne

I use the DD Machine cutter. It works great. You just need an indexing head. It takes about 45 min to make a 35 spline axle. Give him a call he was a huge help when I got my setup.

DD Machine cutter for 30 degree pressure angle stuff, a 45 degree chamfer cutter tool (can't remember the details about it, it uses square inserts) for 45 degree pressure angle stuff.
