I have seen a powertrax that is like a sauser that replaces the spider gears. It isn't that. I just tore down a FF and the long side shaft was busted at the hub. I thought about it and looked into the carrier. Well it looks like a toyota detroit to me. It is a solid peice that screws together at the ring gear through three screws. Inside where the shafts slide in is a solid plate. There is no acces to the spider gears through the carrier without unscrewing it. There is also some filters on the carrier. It looks nothing like the open diff I have. It had 4.10's on it though. Is it a LS? Can someone help this idiot out and throw me some pix?

This has been discussed quite a bit on this board. The gov lock is know to be pretty weak and most people get rid of it or try to weld it up.

Gov-lok's work great... if you generally tend to blip the throttle and spin the tires about half a turn, all while keeping thr PRM's up enough to engage the locker and keep it engaged

From my marginal Axle Tech pages (http://www.alaskaoffroad.com/axle_tech.htm)...
14 Bolt GOV Lock. Note the three cross-shaft design. You can see the three countersunk screw holes that hold the two halves together. The open carrier does not use these screws. http://www.theunholytrinity.org/cracks_smileys/ups/icis/ices_lol_ani.gif

Gov-lok it is for sure.... I read about the explanation of it and it helped alot. It actually sounds about perfect for a moderate wheeler or tow rig. Can I just pull out the drop out and hook the 4.56 ring gear to it and re put it in and setup backlash? Just did this with another axle but didn't test if that was the "ok" way to do it... Don't need to eat R&P cuz I'm an idiot. :D

4.56 and up is a carrier break and you said it came with 4.10's right? So no, I do not think you can just put the 4.56 gear on.

I don't understand why I couldn't. I have a diff with 4.10's and a gov. And one with 4.56's and open. It's a carrier change

You can't put the 4.56 gears on the 4.10 carrier because the ring gear would be too far away from the pinion unless you use a thick 4.56 ring gear or spacer. When you go up numerically in ratio of the gears then the manufacturer moves the ring gear closer to the pinion because the pinion is getting smaller (fewer teeth) as ration increases. 4.56 and up is a carrier break for the 14 bolt which means that a different carrier (or spacer) is needed when using 4.56 vs. the 4.10's. Hope that helps. :D

he is not wanting to put the 4.56 ring and pinion on the 4.10 carrier, he has two seperate carriers, one with 4.10 and a gov loc, then another seperate carrier open with 4.56's....I don't know the answer to his question though, sounds like you could, but I'm not experienced with differentials.
