This is the rig with the fawkin´ sticky rear disc brakes and vibrating front driveshaft...:( But it´s gettin´ there
It started life as a factory coily, but nothing below the output of the tranny has survived. Comments, good or bad, are most welcome.
UZI 9mm 05-02-2002, 02:10 PM o.k. i give......... what the hell are these things (no, not the panhard, the two lower rods that attach to the.......rear knuckles??  ) almost looks like a start of a rear steer that was either decided against, or future consideration??
cool, what ever it is:D
0ILBURNER 05-02-2002, 02:25 PM Hey Bill,
Can we get a picture of those control arms?:) Are they factory?
Not bad! ...for a Newbie....:)
mikrosilakhan 05-02-2002, 04:17 PM I was thinkin of building front and rear panhards. It just seems like it would limit articulation but apperantly not huh? I know looking and some videos and pics of mine you can actualy see the whole ass end pushed over like 3 inches or more

What you´re seeing is a front axle used in the rear. Those two bars attach to the knuckles to lock them up. I decided to use a front axle for a few reasons.
- disc brakes
- floating axles
- locking hubs for evential flat-towing
- a cool rear alignment system
- smaller pumpkin size (Dana 30) for more clearance
I have considered rear steer and maybe eventually I´ll do it using a simple hydraulic system. But for now I just made some steel spacers to go where the king pin bearings would be and locked everything up...

I am using panhards principally because the factory coily uses them and I wanted to at least "follow" the factory concept, using the existing chassis mounts. While they do limit articulation somewhat and have the bad trait of throwing the axle sideways, for the kind of running I do, deep mud and ruts, I´ve got more than enough. Besides, I´m locked in both axles, so a little tire lift doesn´t affect me that much...:D

No, those control arms are not factory. I designed and built them myself out of stainless steel. Why stainless?? Coz it looks cool (I´m a closet poser  :rasta: ) and I get if for free!!!:D :D :D PITA to wiork with, tho... :p
Anyhoo, I´ll try to see what pics I might have and post them. If you want, I could even make available my CAD drawings of the entire suspension as well, but I´d need somewhere to put them up (no red star yet)...
So Bill, what's the price in USD for a factory coily in Brazil, say one of the same vintage as yours? How about front clips and grills? :D :D :D :D :D

Actually, they´re no longer sold here, 1999 was the last year. The Sami was then replaced by that off road monster, the Jimny:mad:
A stock 1998, same year as mine, goes for around U$ 8000. Front clip and grill, don´t know, but I´m sure that they´re really expensive, coming from Japan. Just don´t get any ideas of stealin´mine!!:D :flipoff2: :D
TNToy 05-03-2002, 10:45 AM Dunno about the tripe-stack flares, but I like the rest of it.
But, did you say you have a D30 f & r? Yikes. Got 44? ;)
0ILBURNER 05-03-2002, 10:56 AM You just THINK we got mud in Memfrica....:D
billj 05-03-2002, 10:58 AM Actually, those triple stack flares are kwite kewl... They´re made out of sponge rubber, the kind that doesn´t absorb water. Flexible and quite resistant.
For the peculiarities of Brasil, they´re ideal. Police can be a real PITA when it comes to the tires sticking out. At the same time, the trails that we run are full of deep ruts and a lot of bank scrubbing goes on.
Dana 30s are also well suited to our trails. No rockcrawling at all, but a LOT of deep mud. Therefore, pure mechanical strength requirements can be compromised somewhat in the interest of more ground clearance.

That´s right. I´m originally from the eastern USA. I THOUGHT that I knew what mud was. Until you do an authentic "jungle run", you simply have no idea. Deep and liquid enough to literally come in thru the window openings...
dangerber 05-03-2002, 11:13 AM I see nothing feeble about that rig. :D
mikrosilakhan 05-03-2002, 01:35 PM Bill thanks for the info on the panhards. Seeing that what i wanted to get rid of was the axles swigning to the side i guess it would be pointless :) Saved me a bunch of screwin around fer nuttin.
Anti-wraps the next project
