: Atlas 4sp Cable Shifter
RatF*ck 10-19-2006, 05:32 AM My Atlas 4sp is on order and it should arrive in a few weeks. I opted for the cable shifter for the reduction unit. Does anyone have any slick location ideas of where to mount this third shifter in a TJ?? Maybe something obvious will come to me during the install, but I was hoping to have something planned out ahead of time.
Pics would be great.
Cue-Ball 10-19-2006, 06:31 AM If you are going to the trouble of putting that atlas in, just remove the unneeded parts of the console and put it any damn where you want.

Uhhh...there's the problem, I don't know about you but I don't have any unneeded parts to my console we are talking about a TJ and I like my cup holders.
Again, I'm looking for some slick, well thoughtout location here. If I want a hack job, I'm certainly qualified to do it myself without suggestions.
Tjeepfreak 10-19-2006, 11:42 AM I opted for the cable shifter too, but I haven't decided where I'm going to put it yet.. but for the time being the insides still gutted, so I'll prolly just put it anywhere I wanna, but I'll keep watch for any good ideas too :D
txapacheguy 10-20-2006, 10:17 PM I dont claim to be too familiar with the dimentions or mounting provisions that come with the atlas cable shift kit, but ive seen some guys put "extra shifters" (for an OX-locker to the best of my recollection) on TJ's just to the left side of the factory transfer case shifter. They probably put sheetmetal screws through the floor pan to hold the bracket, and im not 100% sure how they got the cable through the floorpan. I would experiment with placing it to the left side of the console, and possily build an aluminum bracket that would attach the shifter mechanism to the floorpan beneath the console without having to chop your carpet. Again, not claiming to have all the answers, just some ideas to spark your own creativity... Please post some pictures when you figure it out!!! Good luck!!!
cacti 09-17-2007, 07:16 PM Reviving an old thread.Where did you guys end up installing the shifter for the 4speed.I'm about ready to install and could use some ideas/pics.
jeeper8650 09-17-2007, 11:12 PM I did mine as txapacheguy said I just cut a small hole to the driverside of the console and put in some sheet metal screws to hold the shifter boot in place. It looks almost stock with that and the other shifters coming through the console in the factory location. I will take some pictures tomarow when its light out to how you.

cacti 09-21-2007, 06:10 PM jeeper8650--------Looks good --I may try using the same spot. How did you get the flat box to set up against the curved tunnel?
jeeper8650 09-22-2007, 12:14 PM I bolted the cable shifter box to the original shifter bracket for the stock tranfercase shifter. That bracket bolts to the tub and is angled so the outside of it is veritcal and perfect for the cable shifter box.
I will try to take some pictures but i only have a camera phone so dark pictures under the jeep dont seem to turn out well
tbeede 09-22-2007, 12:21 PM get out a shop light so you can shed some light on this issue for us! I was going to put mine just to the left of the driver seat or rig up an air-ram shift setup. I kinda like that location... doesn't look like it will take up too much leg room for me. I'm a 6'5 250 so room in the cab is premium!

Damn- I no longer have that bracket.I scrapped it 2yrs ago when I went to an AA bracket specifically to eliminate the body mount.I would still like to see pics-I'm sure I could easily get another body bracket.
WIENS4x4 09-22-2007, 05:56 PM i put them next to the e brake handle
i believe thats what aa sugests too
its easy and flat mounting place and doesnt take leg room away
jeeper8650 09-22-2007, 09:17 PM ok ill break out the flashlight and try to get some pictures tomarow
jeeper8650 09-23-2007, 04:37 PM Here our some pictures of how I mounted the cable shifter box. They are not great but you can sort see how it was mounted.

I,m under the weather so no chance to look/work on the Jeep.Do you have any interior or underneath pics of this?
tbeede 09-24-2007, 10:52 AM so with respect to the mounting shown in the photo it looks like you just drilled two holes through the side of the shifter leaver box and just bolted it up to the stock holes?
jeeper8650 09-24-2007, 03:37 PM exactly. It works well it has been on there for about a 1 year and a half now and still work just as well as it did on day one.
tbeede 09-24-2007, 09:19 PM great, looks like a good position and safe from driveshaft interference... I'm going to try that asap...
jeeper8650 09-25-2007, 08:34 AM Cool post up some pictures of the install
tbeede 09-26-2007, 07:17 PM well, I'm working on the jeep today and I took a look at mounting my hi-low shifter in the same spot and it isn't going to work. I'm not sure exactly what the difference between our jeeps is but my twin stick overlaps that spot. I've got a NV3550 tranny and I6. Any ideas?
jeeper8650 09-26-2007, 08:45 PM same here nv3550 and an I6. On mine the hi/lo shifter touches the front twin stick shifter but it easily slides by. Mine is an 01. Them rubbing or touching isnt a problem they have been that way for coming up on 2 years with no problems. So my sugesstion is that its tight but it does work. I actually took my carpet out the other day cuz i left the doors off in the rain. So i will take some more pictures so you can get a better idea of where exactly it is mounted
tbeede 09-26-2007, 10:24 PM I can't excatly tell from your pics where the twin stick is in relation to the hi-low for the range box. If you could measure it how long is the round tube that acts as a sleeve over the threaded rod for the twin sticks. I'm wondering if I've got my twin sticks positioned futher out than yours. The twin stick over laps the two bolt holes that are in the stock bracket that you've used to bolt up the hi-low selector. Anyway, maybe you can get a photo from the side angle facing the bolt heads you use for mounting.
