: About Longfields?

Hi there.

I'm Jare Salonen from Finland. Some hard core internet surfers might know me from our cars like: Moggster, Alfaster, Chemog, RR Special.
But that is not the case. Last Wednesday we were having fun in the mud and I broked my birfield in my '77 BJ-40. It has HJ-60 engine (6 cylinder 4litre diesel) and transmission an T-case from the same car from early 80. I used Trelleborg tractor tyres (sized 400/55-17.5") they are pretty much same size as 35/16 Boggers but the tread is much more aggressive. Birfield was old so it was time to break.

So now I should invest new birfiled to right side and at the same time I have decided to change the rattling one to the left side. Many Finnish trial drivers uses original toyota birfileds in their cars and has pretty good results, but Toyota-Finland has raised prices very high, so now I'm open for new ideas.

Little while ago I read something about this Super Birfield that now is named Longfiled. And found out that it's strong and cheap compared to Marlins Marfield.

Question is that is Longfield the best on the market compared to price? I also read something about the waranty thing but I think that is not going to be my problem cause I live here far far away from US :) Or does the waranty include also other countries?

Are the longfields always ordered straight from Bobby Long? And I think that this is also the cheapest way to get them...am I right?

One way is that we strenghten aftermarket birfields with steel ring and try out how long they last. Few Finnish off roaders have done those, but I haven't asked how well they last and/or do they break center cage now when the out is stronger.

Well I hope to get some answers and I'll be glad to help you if You have some questions.

there is a set of newfields in the for sale section for a good price. I guess they aren't as strong as the long fields but the price might be right.

 More aggressive than a bogger!?!?!?!? We need pics!!!

Run the longfields. I am sold... Strongest and cheapest out on the market today...
get them straight from Bobby. superbirfields.com (http://www.angelfire.com/ab6/axle/)

He treats the inner and outer cages in the birfs.. Much stronger than just adding a ring to the outside of the birf...

BTW, welcome and nice first post!!!

Cool pics Jare. The tractor tires look bad ass on a cruiser. I also like the snokle set-ups, do you guys make them or buy them?

Most of us makes them ourselves like I did. But guys said to me that mine is made of too small tube so the engine is not getting enough air when driving full gas. But I was really busy at doing it so I just made it from those tubes that I had.

These are not Trelleborg Twin 414 model, but they are over 44" tall and make is Taurus. We used these tyres in our Chemog (Chevy+Range Rover+Unimog).

Did you guys trim those fenders or just throw the tires on and let them take care of the sheet metal?:D

Both the Toyota and Chemog fenders are trimmed. In Toy front fenders are lifted about 1-1,5" and they are made of fiberglass and inner fenders are metal. Rear fenders are trimmed as much as possible without making them new. ANd then there are falres made of trucks plastic fenders. Flares are only used when driving in mud with Trelleborg tyres or 35/16-15" beadlocked Boggers.

In Chemog there aint much left of original Range Rover body. We made doors, fenders and part of the hood ourself from aluminium. Body is narrowed more than 10" and its shortened and bit lowered too. Wheelbase is still the Range Rover 100". Only parts that are left from this car is body with roll cage and the modified Unimog frame. Rest of the parts we moved to our Moggster in 1998.

What do you pay for the birfields in Finland? I think Toyota in Sweden wants about 700 euro for one birfield.

WHAAAT???
Then Finnish Toyota is cheap place if compared to Sweden. In Finland one costs about 370 euro without any discounts. Friend of mine has been saying that he can get 40% of, but I don't believe him. Gotta ask again at next weekend when I see him.

So what kind of wheels did you mount those tractor tires on?
Are you running the standard 6-lug Toyota setup?

Wheel is 17.5" and first they had Volvo C-303 bolt pattern for portal axles and when I bought them I changed the centers to toyotas own. Wheels that donated the centers are original 40 series wheels with the lock ring. Friend of mine has driven with them about 100km/h with his LJ-70 (Rover 3.5L Efi V8 + 4 geared automatic and ARBs in F/R) and he said they work amazingly well compared to their look and the speed limit that is stamped to the side of the tyre :emb:

:) Well that's a bit hard cause we used Chemog from '95 to '97 and then we shifted axles, engine, transmissions and many other parts to our Moggster. And now we are buiding new car Alfaster and we hope to get it ready for next saturday. Thats when we start our Trial CUP series.

Dude, really like the style and look of off-road vehicles you guys build on your side of the earth. Your sig mentions formula off-road, is that like a rally race? Rally racing on the speed channel off the satellite is one of the better things on the tube these days. If we had something like that in the states it would give me a good reason to thrash on my girlfriends car.

:D Here is pic for you of one Formula Off Road car that is driven by one friend of mine in Sweden (Hasse Mäki Racing (http://www.makioffroadracing.com)). Formula Off Road is originally from Iceland and now it has spread all over Nordic Countries (Norway, Sweden and Denmark and now us in Finland are the newbies of this sport ).:p
