I just swapped a 98 4.0L out of a TJ in my 87 YJ. I want to do a custom flat dash with autometer gauges was wondering what style guages do I have to run for them to work right do I run the electrical ones or do I have to run the mechanical ones which are the easiest. And if I get an autometer speedometer what do I do about my cable speedo do I run the stock cable or do I have to get an aftermarket cable for the autometer speedo cause the autometer speedo does not come with a cable.. Thanks

basically....you can run what ever you want...If you run electrical, then the sending units have to match the gauges (ie. proper ranges - volts, ohms, etc for each type of gauge...) I prefer mechanical on oil pressure and water temp, but I run electrical on tranny temp, oil temp, fuel, and voltage (duh). As for the speedo cable...I don't have a clue, hence why my gauge hasn't been hooked up in the 2 years the gauge has been mounted in the dash :D I'd assume a standard cable would work and the only variable would be the "little gear reduction thingy" on the t-case that the cable hooks to - it has to be calibrated to your tire and gears...If your speedo was correct before then it should just need a cable and work fine now....

I made a dash for my FJ-40 and i used all auto meter guages. I got the street rod guage kit plus the tac. the set part number is #1400 and it comes with everything except the tac. I dont have a speedo cable yet but Autometer works with a company that will make you anything that you need.
